Nitish Kumar's Rajya Sabha Nomination Ignites Succession Speculation in Bihar
The ongoing Samriddhi Yatra of Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has unveiled a significant political development that is capturing widespread attention across the state. While CM Nitish Kumar himself has maintained a conspicuous silence regarding his recent Rajya Sabha nomination, for which he formally submitted papers earlier this month, his political allies and colleagues have been actively fueling speculation about his potential departure from the chief minister's post.
Mixed Signals from NDA Leaders During Yatra Events
This intriguing dynamic has manifested prominently throughout Nitish Kumar's journey across the Kosi-Seemanchal region. During Friday's events in Saharsa, crowds observed with keen interest as two senior NDA leaders addressed the CM's possible transition to national politics. Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary of the BJP and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Vijay Kumar Choudhary of the JD(U), who hold the second and fourth positions respectively in the NDA government, both referenced the chief minister's potential move to Delhi while addressing gathered supporters.
Similar scenarios unfolded during the yatra's arrival in Supaul and Purnia, where attendees were reminded about Nitish Kumar's next career move, though with the consistent qualification that he remains "indispensable" for Bihar's political landscape and governance structure.
Contradictory Statements from Key Ministers
JD(U) minister Vijay Kumar Choudhary offered particularly revealing commentary while thanking crowds for their sustained faith in Nitish Kumar's leadership over the past two decades. He unexpectedly referenced the chief minister's possible departure from state politics but immediately qualified this by asserting that any future government would be incapable of functioning without Nitish's "guidance and blessings."
"In the coming days, the new NDA government will come to power in Bihar," Choudhary declared to assembled supporters. "But the next government simply cannot operate without the direction and blessings of our chief minister."
In striking contrast, Deputy CM Samrat Choudhary repeatedly emphasized that "Nitish is not going anywhere" during his addresses. "Today, the Bihar government is running under Nitish Kumar's leadership, and tomorrow too, the NDA government will function under his guidance," he asserted in Saharsa, echoing similar sentiments expressed during previous yatra stops in Purnia and Supaul.
Growing Tensions Within the Alliance
The speculation surrounding Bihar's political future has created visible tensions within the ruling coalition. Rural Development Minister Shrawan Kumar, considered particularly close to Nitish Kumar, displayed evident irritation when questioned about whether the next chief minister might emerge from the BJP ranks.
"Any decision regarding the chief minister's position will be made with the consensus of top NDA leaders," Kumar informed journalists on Friday, carefully avoiding direct endorsement of any particular candidate.
When pressed specifically about the acceptability of a BJP chief minister, he responded more cryptically: "NDA leaders will jointly make this decision, and they must demonstrate solidarity on such political matters." Regarding growing demands for Nitish Kumar's son Nishant Kumar to assume the chief ministerial role, Shrawan Kumar deferred to senior leadership, stating this was an issue for higher-level discussions.
Background of the Political Uncertainty
Speculation about Bihar's next chief minister intensified significantly after Nitish Kumar filed his Rajya Sabha nomination papers on March 5. The nomination ceremony, conducted in the presence of Union Home Minister Amit Shah and other prominent NDA figures, triggered immediate protests within certain JD(U) factions who expressed concerns about the party's future direction and leadership.
The Samriddhi Yatra has thus transformed from a routine political tour into a platform for navigating complex succession politics, with NDA partners sending mixed messages about Nitish Kumar's imminent political trajectory while simultaneously attempting to maintain coalition unity and public confidence in Bihar's governance continuity.
