Nashik Municipal Corporation Intensifies Property Tax Recovery Drive
The Nashik Municipal Corporation (NMC) has escalated its efforts to recover outstanding property tax dues by issuing fresh notices to an additional 500 defaulters. Each of these property owners owes more than Rs 1 lakh in unpaid taxes, and they have been given a strict 21-day deadline to clear their arrears. Failure to comply within this period will result in the issuance of warrants against them, marking a significant step in the civic body's year-end recovery campaign.
Recent Notices Bring Total to 950 Defaulters Targeted
This latest action follows a similar move over the past two weeks, where the property tax department sent notices to 450 defaulters. Consequently, the total number of notices served in recent days has now reached 950. According to municipal regulations, annual property tax payments are due by December 31 each year. Taxpayers who miss this deadline face a penalty of 2% per month on the outstanding amount. Despite these clear guidelines, many individuals have failed to meet their obligations, prompting the NMC to initiate this aggressive recovery drive.
NMC Faces Rs 52 Crore Shortfall with 40 Days Remaining
The urgency behind these notices is underscored by the NMC's financial targets. For the 2025-26 financial year, the corporation had set a property tax collection goal of Rs 270 crore. However, as of now, only Rs 218 crore has been collected, leaving a substantial shortfall of Rs 52 crore. To meet its target, the NMC must recover this amount within the remaining 40 days of the fiscal year. Compounding the challenge, this year's collection is Rs 7 crore lower than the amount gathered during the same period last year, highlighting the pressing need for accelerated recovery efforts.
Election Duties Delayed Tax Recovery, Now Resumed
Civic officials have attributed the collection shortfall to operational disruptions caused by recent election duties. Over the past three months, a significant portion of NMC staff was deployed for election-related work, which delayed tax recovery initiatives. With the elections now concluded, staff members have returned to their respective departments and have resumed the year-end recovery drive with renewed focus.
Commissioner Directs Expedited Recovery from Defaulters
To bolster collections in the final stretch of the financial year, NMC Commissioner Manisha Khatri recently convened a crucial meeting with the property tax department and divisional officers from all six divisions. During this meeting, she issued clear instructions to expedite recovery from defaulters, emphasizing the importance of meeting the Rs 270 crore target. This directive aims to streamline efforts and ensure that the corporation can close the financial gap effectively.
The NMC's proactive measures reflect a determined approach to enhance revenue collection and uphold fiscal responsibility. Property owners in Nashik are urged to settle their dues promptly to avoid legal actions and contribute to the city's development initiatives.
