Noida Sector 99 Residents Rally Against Persistent Civic Neglect
In Noida's Sector 99, a centrally located and well-connected area near the Noida Expressway, over 5,000 residents are raising their voices against a litany of unresolved civic problems. The community, comprising both residential plots and apartments, has long grappled with issues such as broken footpaths, loose interlocking tiles, frequent sewer overflows, and a stark lack of green spaces, all of which have severely impacted their quality of life.
Compounding Grievances and Health Hazards
Residents allege that their complaints have fallen on deaf ears, with the Noida Authority showing little attention to pending grievances. Vinod Chaudhary, general secretary of the Sector 99 Residents' Welfare Association (RWA), highlighted the dangers posed by the deteriorating infrastructure. "We constantly face sewer overflow issues in the sector. Apart from that, the footpath and streets are broken, interlocking tiles are loose and pose a threat of accident," he stated, emphasizing the immediate risks to public safety.
The problems are not new; they have persisted for an extended period, exacerbating residents' frustrations. In January, Narottam Sharma, the RWA president of LIG flats in Sector 99, filed a formal complaint about clogged sewers and dirty, foul-smelling water emerging from taps in these homes. This has raised serious health concerns, as contaminated water supplies can lead to various diseases.
Environmental and Infrastructure Woes
Beyond the sewer and water issues, residents have also lamented the neglect of green spaces, which has diminished the sector's ecological balance and aesthetic appeal. "No horticulture work is done in the sector. We cannot sit idle while there's all-around civic neglect," Chaudhary added, pointing to the lack of maintenance that affects daily living conditions.
Additional challenges include poor waste disposal practices and outdated or insufficient electrical infrastructure, further compounding the residents' woes. Chaudhary noted, "We constantly face water supply issues and poor electrical infrastructure. Despite repeated complaints, there's no redress," underscoring the systemic failures in basic civic amenities.
Community Mobilization for Change
In response to the ongoing neglect, residents are now mobilizing to demand urgent intervention. Rishipal Singh, another resident, explained, "The residents are now rallying to demand intervention from the Noida Authority CEO, seeking immediate redress of all pending issues, maintaining the ecological balance and protecting public spaces from encroachment by private interests." This collective action aims to pressure authorities into addressing the long-standing problems and restoring the sector's livability.
As of now, a response from the Noida Authority is still awaited, leaving residents in a state of uncertainty. The situation highlights broader issues of civic governance in urban areas, where rapid development often outpaces infrastructure maintenance and community welfare.
The residents' plight serves as a stark reminder of the importance of timely civic interventions to ensure safe and healthy living environments. With their rallying cry, Sector 99's community hopes to spark meaningful change and set a precedent for accountability in Noida's urban management.
