Delhi Metro Launches Major Escalator Overhaul Program
The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has initiated a comprehensive phased overhaul of 130 escalators that have completed 15 years of service. This significant maintenance drive is designed to ensure passenger safety, restore optimal performance, and extend the operational life of these critical infrastructure components. According to metro officials, the escalators have a design life of 30 years, and this mid-life overhaul is crucial to achieving that longevity.
Phased Approach to Minimize Commuter Disruption
The overhaul program is being executed in a carefully planned phased manner to minimize inconvenience to daily commuters. In the first phase, work has been completed on escalators at key stations including Akshardham, Mayur Vihar Phase I, Mayur Vihar Extension, New Ashok Nagar, and Noida Sector 15 on the Blue Line. The second phase will target another 130 escalators that have reached their mid-life mark, followed by escalators installed during Delhi Metro's Phase I and II expansion projects.
To ensure smooth passenger flow, DMRC has implemented several measures:
- Work on only one escalator per station is undertaken at any given time.
- Temporary hoardings and signage are displayed at stations to inform commuters about ongoing work.
- Adequate alternative routes, including lifts, staircases, and parallel escalators, are provided wherever available.
International Standards and Extensive Maintenance Procedures
Delhi Metro adheres to stringent international maintenance standards, benchmarking against global systems like the London Underground, Tokyo Metro, and Singapore MRT. While routine preventive maintenance involves monthly, quarterly, half-yearly, and annual servicing, the mid-life overhaul is a far more extensive process.
A metro official explained the detailed overhaul procedure: "Mid-life overhauling involves comprehensive inspection, dismantling of major components, replacement of step chains, axles, profiles, floor plates, and rollers, followed by system recalibration and rigorous load testing."
Enhanced Safety and Extended Lifespan
The primary objectives of this overhaul initiative are to enhance passenger experience, improve safety standards, reduce the likelihood of sudden breakdowns, and restore the escalators to peak performance. Although a complete overhaul typically requires 45 days, Delhi Metro's efficient processes usually complete the work in approximately 15 days per escalator.
This proactive maintenance strategy not only ensures reliable service but also represents a significant investment in sustainable urban infrastructure. By extending the service life of these escalators to their full 30-year design capacity, DMRC demonstrates its commitment to world-class public transportation standards while prioritizing commuter convenience and safety across the network.
