Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde on Saturday welcomed six Members of Parliament previously aligned with Uddhav Thackeray into the Shiv Sena fold, describing the move as the next phase of the party's expansion following his 2022 rebellion against the former chief minister.
Rebel MPs Join Shinde Faction
The six MPs, who were loyal to Uddhav Thackeray, crossed over to the Shinde-led faction in a significant political realignment. Shinde referred to them as 'dhurandhar', a Marathi term meaning skilled or adept, highlighting their political acumen. The development underscores the ongoing fragmentation within the original Shiv Sena, which split after Shinde's revolt in June 2022.
According to sources close to the chief minister, the MPs' decision was driven by a desire for stable leadership and development-focused governance. The move is expected to bolster Shinde's position in the state and national political landscape ahead of upcoming elections.
Background of the Split
The Shiv Sena, founded by Bal Thackeray, has been a dominant force in Maharashtra politics. In June 2022, Eknath Shinde led a rebellion against Uddhav Thackeray, taking a majority of party MLAs with him and forming a government in alliance with the Bharatiya Janata Party. Since then, the Shinde faction has been recognized as the official Shiv Sena by the Election Commission of India, while the Thackeray faction continues to challenge this decision in court.
Shinde described the latest development as a natural progression of the party's consolidation. “This is the next phase of our growth. The people of Maharashtra have supported our vision of good governance, and these MPs have recognized that,” he said.
Political Implications
The inclusion of six MPs from the Thackeray camp is a major blow to Uddhav Thackeray's leadership, reducing his parliamentary strength and signaling further erosion of support. Political analysts suggest that this could trigger more defections, as the Shinde faction gains momentum. The move also strengthens the ruling alliance's numerical advantage in both the state assembly and the Lok Sabha.
Opposition parties, including the Nationalist Congress Party and Congress, have criticized the development, accusing Shinde of undermining democratic processes. However, Shinde maintained that the MPs joined voluntarily, driven by the party's pro-people policies.
Shinde's Vision for the Party
Speaking at a press conference, Shinde outlined his vision for the Shiv Sena, emphasizing unity and development. “We are building a party that represents the true spirit of Hindutva and Maharashtra's pride. The 'dhurandhar' MPs will play a crucial role in this journey,” he said. The chief minister also reiterated his commitment to the welfare of farmers, youth, and women, key constituencies for the party.
The development comes ahead of the 2027 Maharashtra assembly elections, where the Shinde faction aims to consolidate its base and expand its reach. With the addition of experienced parliamentarians, the party hopes to counter opposition narratives and strengthen its organizational structure.
