Eight Women Develop Complications After C-Sections in Jodhpur
The crisis surrounding Caesarean sections in Rajasthan has deepened, with eight women developing complications after undergoing the procedure at a hospital in Jodhpur. This follows similar incidents in Kota and Bikaner, where multiple women suffered severe health issues post-surgery, prompting investigations and public outcry.
Details of the Jodhpur Incident
According to officials, the eight women were operated on at a private hospital in Jodhpur over the past week. They reported symptoms such as fever, abdominal pain, and wound infections. Two of the women are said to be in critical condition and have been transferred to a tertiary care center for advanced treatment. The hospital administration has denied any negligence, attributing the complications to pre-existing health conditions of the patients.
Context: Similar Cases in Kota and Bikaner
Earlier this month, at least 12 women in Kota developed post-C-section complications, including severe infections and prolonged recovery. In Bikaner, five women reported similar issues, leading to a temporary suspension of elective C-sections at a government hospital. The Rajasthan Medical and Health Department has formed a committee to investigate the incidents and recommend safety measures.
Government Response and Investigation
Rajasthan Health Minister Parsadi Lal Meena stated, "We have taken the matter very seriously. A high-level team has been dispatched to Jodhpur to assess the situation and ensure proper medical care for the affected women. Any lapses in protocol will be dealt with strictly." The committee is expected to submit its report within two weeks.
Impact on Women's Health and Public Trust
The recurring complications have raised concerns about the quality of maternal healthcare in the state. Dr. Anjali Sharma, a gynecologist at a government hospital in Jaipur, said, "These incidents highlight the need for stringent infection control measures and better training for surgical teams. C-sections are major surgeries, and any negligence can have life-threatening consequences." The state government has been urged to audit all private and public hospitals performing C-sections to prevent further incidents.
Statistical Overview
According to the National Family Health Survey-5, the C-section rate in Rajasthan is 24.5%, higher than the national average of 21.5%. In urban areas like Jodhpur, the rate exceeds 30%. While medically necessary C-sections can save lives, unnecessary procedures increase the risk of complications. The recent crisis has reignited debates on the overuse of C-sections in India.
