Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray convened a meeting with party MLAs on Monday to chalk out a strategy to corner the Mahayuti government during the upcoming monsoon session of the Maharashtra legislature. The move comes after a series of defections that weakened the party's strength in the assembly.
Focus on law and order, crimes against women
According to a party MLA who attended the meeting, Thackeray instructed lawmakers to aggressively target the government over the deteriorating law and order situation in the state. He specifically highlighted the rising number of crimes against women and the increasing cases of drug peddling, urging MLAs to raise these issues consistently on the floor of the house.
The MLA, speaking on condition of anonymity, said, “Thackeray asked us to raise these issues in every possible forum and not let the government off the hook. He believes that the Mahayuti coalition is vulnerable on these fronts.”
Defection blow and strategy session
The meeting was held in the wake of recent defections that saw several Shiv Sena (UBT) MLAs switch allegiance to the ruling alliance. This has reduced the party’s numbers in the assembly, making it harder to mount effective opposition. However, Thackeray stressed that the party would continue to fight on issues affecting the common man.
“Despite the setbacks, we will not be silenced. The government must be held accountable for its failures,” Thackeray told the MLAs, according to the party source.
Monsoon session plans
The monsoon session is expected to begin in the first week of July. The Shiv Sena (UBT) plans to submit adjournment motions and raise questions on specific incidents of crime and drug trafficking. The party is also likely to seek a debate on the state’s economic situation and farmer distress.
Thackeray’s strategy session indicates that the party intends to use the assembly as a platform to rebuild its image after the defections and to position itself as the primary opposition force against the Mahayuti government.
