Odisha CM Majhi Directs Immediate Start to Cuttack Riverfront Project
In a significant move to boost tourism and environmental conservation, Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Friday reviewed the ambitious Cuttack River Front Development project. He issued clear directives to officials to expedite all preliminary processes and commence first-phase work without delay, signaling a strong push for this transformative initiative.
Project Overview and Key Details
The comprehensive project is set to cover a vast area of 426 acres along the scenic Mahanadi riverbank in Cuttack, with an estimated investment of Rs 210 crore. In alignment with National Green Tribunal directives, a substantial portion of the land—284 acres—will be developed as a dedicated green zone. This focus on sustainability ensures the preservation of natural habitats while promoting ecological balance.
The remaining 142 acres will be transformed into a vibrant, tourism-friendly space designed to host festive activities and attract visitors. This dual approach balances environmental stewardship with economic development, creating a model for responsible urban planning.
Planned Components and Features
The riverfront development will feature an array of attractions aimed at enhancing the visitor experience and showcasing local culture. Key components include:
- Odisha Haat: A marketplace highlighting traditional crafts and products from the region.
- Heritage Village: An immersive space celebrating Odisha's rich cultural history.
- Picnic Area and Food Court: Amenities for leisure and dining, making the riverfront a family-friendly destination.

Chief Minister Majhi emphasized that the riverfront should be developed as a national-level tourist attraction, capable of drawing visitors from across India and beyond. To achieve this, he instructed officials to study Gujarat's Sabarmati riverfront model, which is renowned for its successful integration of urban development, recreation, and environmental sustainability.
Majhi also called for the beautification of riverbank protection works undertaken by the water resources department. He stressed that such infrastructure should serve dual purposes: providing essential flood protection while also enhancing the area's visual appeal and tourist potential.
Future Phases and Enhancements
During the review meeting, the chief minister outlined proposals for subsequent phases of the project. These include the beautification of Dhabaleswar Temple and the development of areas near the National Law University, aimed at creating a cohesive and expansive tourist circuit.
To further boost the riverfront's allure, Majhi suggested introducing cruise operations on the Mahanadi River. This initiative would offer unique perspectives of the landscape and add an exciting recreational element. He assured that additional funds would be allocated if necessary to ensure the project's success and timely completion.
