Odisha Ministers Rebut Naveen Patnaik's Apprehensions Over Delimitation and Women's Reservation
In a sharp political exchange, Odisha's law minister Prithiviraj Harichandan and revenue and disaster management minister Suresh Pujari on Thursday strongly countered leader of opposition Naveen Patnaik's expressed fears that the state's interests might be compromised by the proposed delimitation exercise and women's reservation initiative. The ministers' rebuttal came on the same day that Naveen Patnaik urged Members of Parliament from Odisha, transcending party affiliations, to vocally champion the state's cause both inside and outside Parliament to secure its rightful position within the Union framework amidst plans to increase Lok Sabha seats.
Naveen Patnaik's Call for Unity and Special Session
Naveen Patnaik had previously written to chief minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Wednesday, formally requesting a special assembly session dedicated to discussing these critical issues. In an open letter addressed to all Odisha MPs, he passionately appealed for a united front to safeguard the state's interests while continuing to endorse genuine and equitable reforms. He explicitly stated that the Biju Janata Dal would mobilize public opinion across Odisha if legitimate concerns remained unaddressed by the central authorities.
Harichandan's Critique of Confusion and Indirect Protest
Addressing the media, law minister Prithiviraj Harichandan asserted that it was unbecoming of a seasoned leader like Naveen Patnaik to generate confusion around what he characterized as a historic reform. "While he cannot oppose women's reservation directly, he is attempting to create indirect contradictions. This mentality should be avoided," Harichandan remarked. He emphasized that the Union government's initiative would profoundly alter history by prioritizing and respecting women in governance structures.
Harichandan further elaborated that establishing uniform-sized and smaller constituencies would significantly enhance the accessibility of elected representatives to the public, thereby improving service delivery and strengthening democratic foundations. "Seeking a special session and creating confusion amounts to an indirect protest. A leader of Naveen babu's stature should avoid such controversy," he added, suggesting that whoever advised the opposition leader on this matter was fundamentally mistaken.
Pujari's Allegations of Speculation and External Influence
Revenue minister Suresh Pujari, speaking independently, accused Naveen Patnaik of reacting prematurely before any concrete plan had been publicly disclosed. "He is speculating about what might be done," Pujari stated, alleging that the former chief minister was being unduly influenced by Congress MP Rahul Gandhi. Regarding Naveen's specific concern that Odisha's interests could be adversely affected, Pujari contended that any decision ratified by Parliament would be universally acceptable.
"It is not about gain or loss for any individual state. No state will lose; the country will benefit," Pujari affirmed. He also pointed out the apparent inconsistency in Naveen Patnaik's stance, noting that the Biju Janata Dal had supported the women's reservation Bill when it was enacted in 2023, fully aware that subsequent delimitation would be necessary.
