Odisha Police Conducts Massive Statewide Crackdown

In a sweeping operation across Odisha, the state police have arrested approximately 2,000 individuals in connection with various crimes and seized over 3,000 kilograms of cannabis, along with weapons and vehicles, during a five-day special drive. The operation, which ran from May 12 to 16, was spearheaded by Superintendents of Police (SPs) and Commissioners under the directive of Director General of Police Y B Khurania.

The enforcement spanned all police ranges in the state, targeting absconding offenders, habitual criminals, and those involved in drug trafficking, illegal arms trade, and cattle smuggling. As part of the drive, authorities executed warrants leading to the arrest of 1,771 individuals, while 190 absconding accused were apprehended and produced before courts. Stringent action was taken against five notorious criminals under the National Security Act. Additionally, 449 habitual offenders were booked under Section 129 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), and 643 individuals faced action under Section 126 of BNSS.

Major Seizures in Drug and Excise Cases

During the period, 31 cases were registered under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, resulting in the arrest of 29 accused. Law enforcement confiscated over 3,026 kilograms of cannabis and 16.6 grams of brown sugar. Six vehicles used in drug trafficking, two mobile phones, and Rs 12,348 in cash were also seized. In addition, 716 excise cases were registered, reflecting a broad crackdown on illicit liquor and related activities.

In a separate enforcement against road safety violations, the police collected a total fine of over Rs 1.89 crore from offenders across the state.

Cattle Smuggling and Illegal Arms Trade Targeted

Police registered five cases related to cattle smuggling and arrested one accused. Prompt action led to the rescue of 33 cows from four vehicles used in the illegal trade. In the fight against illegal arms, nine cases were registered, and 13 individuals were arrested. Authorities seized 20 unlicensed firearms from those apprehended.

The special drive underscores the Odisha Police's commitment to curbing crime and ensuring public safety. DGP Y B Khurania commended the efforts of all officers and personnel involved in the operation.
