Former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Launches Scathing Attack on AIADMK Leadership
In a significant political development, former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister O Panneerselvam has launched a blistering critique against AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami, accusing him of releasing an election manifesto that lacks credibility and is designed to mislead the public.
Manifesto Credibility Questioned Amid Electoral Setbacks
Speaking to reporters at Bodinayakanur on Wednesday, Panneerselvam asserted that the AIADMK's election promises cannot be trusted, citing numerous unfulfilled commitments from Palaniswami's previous tenure. The veteran politician emphasized that after suffering more than ten consecutive electoral defeats – ranging from the R K Nagar bypoll to the 2024 Lok Sabha elections – the current leadership is now making extravagant promises merely to conceal these failures.
"The election manifesto released by EPS has absolutely no credibility whatsoever," Panneerselvam declared. "This is nothing but an attempt to distract from the party's repeated electoral disappointments through bundles of empty promises."
Allegations of External Influence in Alliance Decisions
Panneerselvam further escalated his criticism by suggesting that Palaniswami is not acting independently in crucial alliance matters. The former chief minister claimed that key decisions regarding the AIADMK's political partnerships are being directly dictated from Delhi, implying significant external influence over the party's strategic direction.
"The fact that some of our alliance partners are contesting under the BJP's lotus symbol clearly indicates that the AIADMK alliance is not under EPS's genuine command," Panneerselvam stated, highlighting what he perceives as diminishing autonomy within the party's leadership structure.
Political Implications and Broader Context
This public denunciation marks another chapter in the ongoing internal tensions within the AIADMK, which has experienced considerable factionalism since the passing of former leader J Jayalalithaa. The allegations come at a critical juncture as political parties across Tamil Nadu prepare for upcoming electoral contests.
The remarks from Panneerselvam – commonly known as OPS – underscore several key concerns:
- Growing skepticism about manifesto implementation based on past performance
- Perceived erosion of regional party autonomy in alliance politics
- Internal party dynamics affecting public credibility and voter trust
- The challenge of rebuilding electoral momentum after successive defeats
Political observers note that such public criticism from a senior leader could potentially influence voter perception and alliance negotiations in the lead-up to future elections. The AIADMK leadership has yet to issue an official response to these specific allegations regarding manifesto credibility and external influence in decision-making processes.
