The Gujarat unit of the Indian National Congress has raised a serious alarm over the state's law and order situation, particularly concerning women's safety. Citing official data, the party disclosed a staggering number of crimes registered against women over a nine-year period.
Shocking Statistics Revealed
At a press conference held at the Gujarat Pradesh Congress Committee (GPCC) headquarters in Ahmedabad on Monday, party spokesperson Manish Doshi presented the grim figures. According to the official data quoted by the Congress, a total of 72,467 crimes against women were registered in Gujarat between 2015 and 2023.
Doshi broke down these numbers to highlight the daily and monthly scale of the crisis. He stated that on average, more than 22 women become victims of crime every single day in the state. This translates to over 670 women being affected each month.
Congress Demands Judicial Probe and Action
Expressing deep concern over the deteriorating situation, the Congress party has put forth a series of demands. The spokesperson emphasized that recent horrific incidents, including the rape of a six-year-old girl in Gandhinagar and similar ghastly crimes in Bhavnagar, are extremely worrying indicators.
Manish Doshi demanded a high-level judicial inquiry into what the party calls the "collapse of law and order." The probe, as per the demand, should specifically investigate the alleged role of political protection in facilitating liquor and drug rackets within the state.
Call for Accountability and Resignation
Going beyond just an inquiry, the Congress has called for immediate and concrete action. The party has squarely placed the responsibility on the state government and its home department. As a direct consequence of the presented data and the recent incidents, the Congress has demanded the resignation of the state's Home Minister.
The party's statement underscores a perception of systemic failure and alleges that criminal networks are operating under a shield of political patronage. The demand for a judicial inquiry aims to uncover any such links and address the root causes behind the high crime statistics against women in Gujarat.
