Palakkad Assembly Polls Overshadowed by Cash-for-Votes Allegations
The polling day in Palakkad assembly constituency was dominated by a simmering controversy surrounding alleged cash-for-votes attempts by BJP workers. The incident has placed the Bharatiya Janata Party firmly on the defensive as voting proceeded across the constituency.
Video Evidence Sparks Political Firestorm
Congress workers have leveled serious accusations against BJP activists, claiming they distributed Rs 5,000 to an elderly woman identified as Devu, a resident of Kannadi grama panchayat in Palakkad district. The opposition party substantiated their claims by releasing video footage on Wednesday that purportedly shows the cash handover transaction.
Election authorities have taken swift action in response to these allegations. The Election Commission has initiated a formal inquiry into the incident, while Palakkad Town South police registered a case against identifiable NDA workers on Wednesday. The district collector is expected to submit the final investigative report to the chief electoral officer by Friday.
BJP Candidate Dismisses Allegations as Political Drama
Shobha Surendran, the BJP candidate contesting from Palakkad, has vehemently denied all accusations. She challenged both media organizations and political rivals to provide concrete proof that those visible in the controversial video were indeed BJP workers.
"This is nothing but a manufactured drama created through collaboration between certain media outlets and Congress workers," Surendran declared on Thursday. She expressed skepticism about claims that a woman had traveled all the way from Mumbai specifically to distribute money in Palakkad constituency.
The BJP candidate specifically refuted allegations that the same woman was photographed sitting alongside her in a vehicle, labeling such assertions as completely false. In a countermove, Surendran has filed an official complaint with the Election Commission against what she describes as fake propaganda being spread by political opponents.
Opposition Parties Maintain Pressure
Meanwhile, LDF candidate NMR Razak has intensified the political pressure by alleging that BJP has been engaged in multiple attempts to influence voters throughout Palakkad constituency. Razak claimed there existed prior information about BJP secretly distributing both cash and sarees to women voters across the region.
The controversy has created significant electoral turbulence in Palakkad, with all major political parties trading accusations even as voters cast their ballots. The Election Commission's forthcoming report is anticipated to provide crucial clarity regarding the veracity of these competing claims.
