AIADMK Leader Palaniswami Accuses CM Stalin of Betraying Tamil Nadu Over Cauvery Issue
In a sharp political attack, AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami on Saturday strongly criticized Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin for sharing a campaign stage with Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar. Palaniswami, while campaigning in Thanjavur and Tiruvarur districts, labeled this association as a "betrayal" of Tamil Nadu's vital interests concerning the longstanding Cauvery water dispute.
Mekedatu Dam Project Poses Grave Threat to Delta Region
Palaniswami specifically pointed to Shivakumar's persistent advocacy for the proposed Mekedatu dam across the Cauvery River, asserting that this project represents a serious and imminent threat to Tamil Nadu's agriculturally crucial delta region. "Shivakumar is determined to implement the Mekedatu dam project. If it is constructed, the delta region will turn into a desert," Palaniswami declared during his address in Thanjavur.
He further emphasized the perceived contradiction in Stalin's actions, stating, "Stalin campaigning alongside a man who has sworn to stop the Cauvery waters meant for us amounts to a betrayal of Tamil Nadu." This criticism extends beyond the current campaign, as Palaniswami also referenced Stalin's visit to Bengaluru in July 2023 for an opposition meeting. He alleged that during that gathering, Stalin failed to prioritize the urgent need for Cauvery water releases for irrigation in the delta, instead focusing discussions on election alliances.
Allegations of Neglect Towards Farmers and Governance
Expanding his critique, Palaniswami accused Chief Minister Stalin of placing "family rule" above effective governance and the welfare of the state's people. "Is he going to save Tamil Nadu, its people, and its agriculture?" he questioned rhetorically, highlighting concerns over agricultural sustainability.
Palaniswami also lambasted Stalin for what he described as a failure to personally engage with distressed farmers, despite the chief minister's self-proclaimed identity as a ‘Deltakaaran' (son of the delta). "Stalin had time to watch a movie for three hours. He now has time to canvass for votes and sip tea in shops. But he did not meet farmers in person," Palaniswami asserted, contrasting these activities with the alleged neglect of farmer outreach.
Unified Front with AMMK's Dhinakaran in Campaign Efforts
The campaign events in Thanjavur and Tiruvarur districts, where Palaniswami was advocating for party candidates, marked a significant political development with the presence of AMMK general secretary TTV Dhinakaran. This appearance represented their first joint campaign effort, signaling a unified opposition front.
Addressing the gathered supporters, Dhinakaran characterized their previous political differences as a "sibling rivalry," now resolved for a common goal. "Some people are afraid seeing us together. We have set aside our differences and come together under the NDA to oust the DMK from power," he stated. Dhinakaran further articulated their alliance's objective: "We have joined forces to form an ‘Amma' government in Tamil Nadu under ‘annan' Palaniswami," referencing the legacy of former chief minister J. Jayalalithaa (‘Amma') and expressing support for Palaniswami (‘annan' or elder brother).
This coordinated campaign strategy underscores a concerted effort by the AIADMK and AMMK to consolidate opposition votes and challenge the ruling DMK government, with the Cauvery water dispute and farmer welfare positioned as central electoral issues.
