AIADMK's Palaniswami Accuses DMK of Defeating Women's Rights in Reservation Bill
Palaniswami: DMK Defeated Women's Rights in Reservation Bill

AIADMK Leader Palaniswami Slams DMK for Opposing Women's Reservation Bill

In a fiery election rally held in Karur on Sunday, AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami launched a scathing attack on the DMK and Congress, accusing them of "defeating the rights of women" by opposing the Constitution Amendment Bill on women's reservation. Palaniswami emphasized that this was not merely a political setback but a fundamental denial of gender equality in India's legislative framework.

Historical Context and AIADMK's Stance on Women's Reservation

Palaniswami highlighted the AIADMK's long-standing commitment to women's empowerment, noting that the party had advocated for 33% reservation for women as early as 1998. He recounted how, as part of the BJP-led alliance, former Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa, popularly known as Amma, presented this demand to Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, who accepted it. "When the Bill was introduced, it was disrupted. Even then, the AIADMK stood firm," Palaniswami stated, contrasting his party's resolve with what he called the DMK's "lip service" without substantive action.

He asserted that the DMK's opposition went beyond political maneuvering, directly impacting women's rights. "They did not merely defeat a Bill—they defeated the rights of women," he declared, framing the issue as a moral failure of the DMK leadership under M. K. Stalin.

Criticism of DMK's Internal Dynamics and Leadership

Expanding his critique, Palaniswami alleged that the DMK has sidelined loyal party workers while promoting individuals based on financial influence. "There is no place in the DMK for those who genuinely work for the party," he claimed, suggesting a culture of favoritism over merit. He framed the upcoming political battle as one between "the people of Tamil Nadu and a family that exploits them," indirectly targeting the Stalin-led DMK hierarchy.

Allegations of Deteriorating Law and Order in Tamil Nadu

Earlier in the day, while campaigning in Tiruchengode, Palaniswami raised serious concerns about the state's law and order situation. He claimed that Tamil Nadu is "flooded with drugs" and cited government data to allege a surge in sexual offences. According to his statements, there have been 24,000 sexual offence cases, including 18,000 involving minors, under the current DMK administration.

Palaniswami criticized Chief Minister M. K. Stalin for failing to protect women and children, accusing the DMK of shielding offenders. He further linked the party to controversies involving illicit liquor and organ trade, alleging complicity in these illegal activities. Citing a recent medical negligence case, he pointed to it as evidence of administrative failure and malpractice within the state.

AIADMK's Welfare Promises for Tamil Nadu

In contrast to his criticisms, Palaniswami outlined the AIADMK's vision for Tamil Nadu if voted to power. He promised a comprehensive welfare agenda, including:

  • Increased free electricity for handloom and powerloom weavers to boost the textile industry.
  • Housing schemes aimed at providing affordable shelter to underprivileged families.
  • Farm loan waivers to alleviate the financial burdens on agricultural communities.

These pledges are part of the AIADMK's strategy to address economic hardships and secure voter support in the upcoming elections.

Palaniswami's remarks underscore the intensifying political rivalry in Tamil Nadu, with women's rights, governance, and welfare at the forefront of the electoral discourse. As the campaign heats up, these issues are likely to play a pivotal role in shaping public opinion and voter decisions.
