Panchamasali Community Leader Demands Return of Allegedly Illegally Acquired Peetha Property
In a significant development concerning religious and community property in Karnataka, prominent Panchamasali community leader and lawyer Somasekhara Kothambari has strongly condemned what he describes as the illegal acquisition of property belonging to the Veerashaiva Lingayat Panchamasali Peetha of Harihara.
Allegations Against Karnataka Border Area Development Authority Chairman
The controversy centers on Somanna Bevinamarada, chairman of the Karnataka Border Area Development Authority and a community leader himself, who stands accused of improperly acquiring the Peetha's property. Kothambari has demanded the immediate return of this property to the Harihara Peetha, emphasizing that such action is essential to uphold the dignity and respect of the religious institution.
Addressing a press conference on Thursday, Kothambari expressed deep disappointment within the community regarding recent developments at the Harihara Panchamasali Peetha. He specifically criticized street protests that have emerged from what he termed misunderstandings, stating that such demonstrations contradict the community's longstanding tradition of discipline, peace, and harmony.
Objections to Baseless Allegations and Call for Integrity
Furthermore, Kothambari objected to what he described as baseless allegations made by senior leaders, including Somanna Bevinamarada, against the Peetha's trustee. He stressed that individuals who question others' integrity must themselves act with purity and transparency in their own conduct.
Recalling historical context, Kothambari noted that former Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai had provided land valued at approximately Rs 5 crore for community development purposes. This land was originally purchased in the name of Siddalinga Swamiji. Following the seer's demise, the property should have been formally transferred to the monastery trust. However, it was allegedly acquired instead in the name of Swamilinga, also known as Somanna Malleshappa Bevinamarada.
The community leader issued a stern warning that the Panchamasali community would not forgive this alleged transgression and insisted on the immediate return of the property to its rightful custodians.Peetha Trustee Appeals for Private Dialogue and Transparency
In response to the escalating tensions, Peetha trustee PD Shirur has urged protesting leaders to engage directly with trustees through private channels. Shirur assured complete transparency and full cooperation in addressing any concerns, advocating for resolution through dialogue rather than public confrontation.
This property dispute highlights ongoing tensions within the community regarding the management and ownership of significant religious assets. The demand for property return underscores broader issues of accountability and proper administration within religious institutions in Karnataka.
