Pune Polls: Pathare Family Splits as Son, Wife Join BJP Against NCP MLA Father
Pathare family split in Pune polls as son, wife join BJP

The political landscape of Pune has been stirred by a significant family development ahead of the municipal elections. In a move that highlights internal political divisions, a husband-wife duo from the influential Pathare family has decided to contest on Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) tickets, while a senior family member remains with the Sharad Pawar-led Nationalist Congress Party (Sharadchandra Pawar) or NCP (SP).

A Family on Different Political Paths

Surendra Pathare and his wife, Aishwarya Pathare, have been officially named as BJP candidates for the upcoming polls. They will be contesting from adjacent wards within the Wadgaon Sheri Assembly constituency. Surendra Pathare will stand from ward number 4, which covers the Kharadi and Wagholi areas. Meanwhile, Aishwarya Pathare is in the electoral race from ward number 3, encompassing Vimannagar, Lohegaon, and Wagholi.

Adding another layer to the family's expanding political footprint within the BJP, Surendra's cousin, Trupti Bharane, has also been fielded by the party from ward number 4. This collective move stands in contrast to the political allegiance of senior family member and sitting MLA, Bapusaheb Pathare, who continues his association with the NCP (SP). He is currently the only MLA from his party in Pune.

Political Speculation and Unease

This development has sparked intense political speculation and discussion across Pune's political circles. Analysts are keenly watching whether the BJP's 'lotus' symbol will gain ground at the potential expense of the NCP (SP)'s 'tutari' (bugle) symbol in parts of Bapusaheb Pathare's own constituency. The sight of his son and daughter-in-law campaigning under a rival party's banner is seen as a unique challenge.

Sources within the NCP (SP) have reportedly expressed unease over these developments. The situation creates a complex dynamic for MLA Bapusaheb Pathare, who is expected to formally campaign for his own party's candidates while navigating these delicate family ties. Party insiders suggest he is likely to maintain his past strategy of keeping channels of communication open across political lines.

Profiles and Political Strategy

The new BJP candidates bring their own profiles to the fray. Surendra Pathare is known in the local community for his social work conducted through an NGO. Aishwarya Pathare, an entrepreneur, has been actively involved in various women-centric programs and initiatives.

A senior BJP leader from east Pune explained the party's rationale, stating that their candidature is a strategic part of the BJP's concerted effort to consolidate and strengthen its position in eastern Pune. By fielding well-known local figures with social connect, the party aims to deepen its roots in the area.

When questioned about his son's political choice, MLA Bapusaheb Pathare offered a measured response. He remarked, "My son is capable of making independent decisions. He is free to decide his future." This statement underscores the personal political autonomy within the family, even as it sets the stage for an electorally intriguing contest in the city.
