Patna Municipal Corporation Greenlights Major Urban Development Initiatives
The empowered standing committee of the Patna Municipal Corporation (PMC) has taken a significant step toward urban transformation by approving a comprehensive package of 69 development proposals during its 20th meeting held on Friday. This decisive move encompasses a wide range of projects aimed at enhancing the city's infrastructure, public amenities, and overall livability.
Riverfront Development and Urban Beautification
A cornerstone of the approved proposals is the ambitious riverfront development project. The urban landscape will be revitalized with dedicated stretches along the river, specifically from Naujar Ghat to Didarganj and from Collectorate Ghat to Digha. These areas are slated to be equipped with modern lighting systems, beautifully designed parks, pedestrian-friendly walkways, and extensive green belts to create recreational spaces for residents.
Furthermore, the committee has cleared plans for the redevelopment of the New Market area, with detailed project reports to be prepared. Major roads across the city will undergo landscaping to improve aesthetics and functionality. City beautification projects under the Swachh Survekshan initiative, along with renovations of community halls and parks, have also received the green light.
Strengthening Drinking Water Infrastructure and Flood Management
Addressing critical civic needs, the PMC has devised a robust strategy to prevent water scarcity, especially during the summer season. The committee approved measures to strengthen the city's drinking water infrastructure, which includes laying pipelines at 80 identified locations and approving high-yield boring projects.
To ensure prompt resolution of water-related issues, twenty-five specialized gangmen teams, each comprising four members, will be deployed. Each team will be assigned three wards to handle pipeline complaints efficiently. In a proactive move to combat urban flooding, the corporation has decided to hire consultants for urban flood management and will prioritize drainage strengthening across the city. Additionally, "Manhole Ambulances" will be made operational to address drainage emergencies swiftly.
Infrastructure Upgrades and Public Amenities
The approved proposals include substantial infrastructure upgrades. A decision has been taken to construct a new mall on Arya Kumar Road, boosting commercial activity. The committee also approved the appointment of a private agency for tax assessment and revenue recovery to improve municipal finances.
Public amenities are set for a major overhaul with the modernization of public toilets across the city. A progress report on the construction of five model toilets was presented during the meeting, and responsibilities for their operation and maintenance were finalized. Additionally, the electric crematoriums at Khajekalan and Gulbi Ghat will be modernized, and repairs for the animal electric crematorium at Ramchak Bairiya have been approved.
Budget Provisions and Future Plans
The committee cleared budget provisions for the fiscal year 2025-26, covering essential areas such as roads, drains, underground sewerage systems, and eco-friendly solid waste management. These provisions ensure that long-term sustainability is integrated into the city's development plans.
Mayor Sita Sahu emphasized the corporation's commitment, stating, "PMC's goal is to complete development projects with speed and high quality to transform Patna into a clean, organised, and modern city." PMC Commissioner Yashpal Meena added, "Execution of all approved proposals will be ensured within the stipulated timeframe. Through regular monitoring, we will ensure that the benefits of these projects reach the citizens promptly." The meeting was attended by Deputy Mayor Reshmi Kumari and other committee members, underscoring the collective effort behind these initiatives.
This comprehensive approval of 69 projects marks a pivotal moment for Patna, signaling a concerted push toward urban renewal and improved quality of life for its residents. The focus on riverfront development, water infrastructure, flood management, and public amenities reflects a holistic approach to city planning that aims to address both immediate needs and long-term growth.
