Sachin Pilot Accuses Kerala CM of Selective Criticism, Alleges BJP-CPM Deal
Congress leader and AICC general secretary Sachin Pilot has launched a sharp critique against Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, accusing him of engaging in selective criticism that targets Rahul Gandhi while remaining conspicuously silent on the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the central government. Speaking to reporters in Kochi on Thursday, Pilot asserted that this pattern is not coincidental but part of a broader political arrangement.
Allegations of a Secret Pact
Pilot claimed that the chief minister and his party, the Communist Party of India (Marxist) or CPM, are deliberately criticizing Rahul Gandhi to please the BJP. He described these attacks as a component of a deal between the BJP and the CPM, suggesting a covert alliance that undermines opposition unity. According to Pilot, this deal explains why Vijayan has refrained from speaking out against the central government's policies.
"The CPM has nothing to say against the central government's petroleum and foreign policies," Pilot stated. "The chief minister is reluctant to criticise the Centre on issues like the shortage of cooking gas. Modi and Pinarayi are not two but one—there are even similarities in their use of posters."
Evidence of Favoritism
To bolster his allegations, Pilot pointed to what he called the biggest example of the BJP-CPM deal: the perceived immunity of CPM leaders from central agencies. He questioned why the BJP, which often advocates for a Congress-free India, does not pursue a CPM-free Kerala. Pilot highlighted that despite central agencies like the Enforcement Directorate (ED) and Income Tax (IT) department harassing Congress leaders, including Rahul and Sonia Gandhi, they have not taken action against CPM leaders facing serious allegations.
"Has the BJP government frozen the bank account of CPM or taken any action against any CPM leaders till date?" Pilot asked. "This is clear protection provided by the BJP to corrupt CPM leaders."
Critique of Kerala's Governance
Beyond the political accusations, Pilot also addressed Kerala's economic challenges. He noted that 95% of the state's revenue is currently used to pay interest and repay loans, indicating severe financial strain. Furthermore, he criticized the Vijayan government's performance, claiming it has failed to bring even a single big industry to Kerala over the past ten years.
In contrast, Pilot promised that if the United Democratic Front (UDF) comes to power, they will implement five guarantees quickly to address these issues. He clarified that the decision on the UDF chief minister would be made through consultation among MLAs and party leadership, emphasizing a collaborative approach.
Broader Implications
This confrontation highlights the intense political rivalries in Kerala and raises questions about opposition dynamics ahead of upcoming elections. Pilot's remarks suggest a strategic move to expose perceived alliances and rally support against both the BJP and CPM. As the political landscape evolves, such allegations could influence voter perceptions and coalition strategies in the region.
