Kannur: Opposition leader-designate Pinarayi Vijayan on Tuesday asserted that the Communist Party of India (Marxist)-led Left Democratic Front (LDF) would return to power with increased strength and broader public support. Speaking after inaugurating the EMS Mandiram at Nediyenga, Sreekandapuram, in Kannur, the former chief minister and CPM politburo member cautioned against viewing the LDF's electoral defeat as its end.
Party Resilience and Public Support
Vijayan emphasized that the CPM has navigated similar challenges in the past and will regain the confidence of the people. He advised political opponents not to overly celebrate the LDF's electoral setback. This was his first direct public response since the May 4 election results, which saw the CPM-led front secure only 35 seats compared to the United Democratic Front's 102, while the Bharatiya Janata Party won three seats. After a decade in power, the LDF faced one of its worst defeats. Vijayan had remained largely out of public view, limiting his reaction to a brief social media post days after the verdict. Reports suggest growing criticism within the party regarding his leadership style.
Acceptance of Mandate and Future Role
Vijayan acknowledged that the electorate desired change, believing it would benefit democracy, leading to the LDF's defeat. He stated, "We accept the people's mandate. The LDF government's sole aim was to drive the state's progress and improve living standards. Development projects were implemented across all regions and should continue. As a constructive opposition, the LDF will extend full support for these initiatives. However, if the government acts against the state's interests, we will strongly oppose it."
Criticism of Union Government
Vijayan alleged that the Union government is attempting to dismantle the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) scheme and harassing farmers. He also commented on international affairs, stating that the United States is plunging people worldwide into crisis, with global issues now affecting even household kitchens.
