PMC Proposes New Parallel Bridge to Alleviate Sinhagad Road Traffic Woes
The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) is actively formulating a comprehensive strategy to construct a new bridge running parallel to the existing Rajaram Bridge. This initiative aims to significantly reduce the persistent traffic congestion plaguing Sinhagad Road. The civic body is currently in the process of appointing a specialized consulting firm to finalize the technical design and conduct a thorough feasibility assessment of the entire proposal.
Current Infrastructure and Planned Enhancements
The existing Rajaram Bridge serves as a crucial two-way arterial link connecting Sinhagad Road with Karvenagar DP Road. According to senior PMC officials, the forthcoming feasibility report will deliver critical clarity on the project's estimated financial cost and detailed structural design specifications. Preliminary architectural plans indicate that the new bridge wing will most likely be constructed on the Swargate-facing side of the current structure.
This major proposal follows several smaller-scale interventions recently executed by the civic administration. The PMC has already completed expansion works at both terminal ends of the Rajaram Bridge—specifically on Sinhagad Road and Karvenagar DP Road—to facilitate smoother and easier vehicle turns. Furthermore, essential structural strengthening and reinforcement work on the existing bridge was successfully concluded just a few months prior.
Resident Perspectives and Commuter Concerns
Vishal Kulkarni, a resident of the Hingne area, acknowledged that while two new flyovers constructed on Sinhagad Road over the past two years have improved overall traffic flow, certain stubborn bottlenecks remain unresolved. "Rajaram Bridge continues to be a major friction point and traffic chokehold," Kulkarni stated. "The municipal administration needs to intensify its focus on improving the entry and exit points at both bridge ends to ensure a consistently smooth vehicular flow."
Frequent commuter Samir Jagatap highlighted that the current lack of viable alternative routes forces the overwhelming majority of vehicles traveling between Sinhagad Road and Karvenagar to rely exclusively on the Rajaram Bridge. Although a new river bridge connecting Suncity to Karvenagar is currently under construction, it remains inaccessible to the public. "The administration must adhere to strict, non-negotiable deadlines to operationalize these critical infrastructure projects without further delays," Jagatap urged emphatically.

In direct response to these widespread public concerns, PMC officials have confirmed that the Suncity-Karvenagar river bridge project is now in its final stages and nearing completion. This vital infrastructure is expected to be fully ready for public commuter use by June 2026, providing much-needed relief.
