In a significant political move, Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) president Anbumani Ramadoss orchestrated a protest demonstration in Chennai on Wednesday. The core demands presented were a state-wide caste survey and a guaranteed 10.5% internal reservation specifically for the Vanniyar community within the existing quota framework of Tamil Nadu.
Political Alliances and Notable Absences
Anbumani Ramadoss had publicly appealed to leaders from all political parties, with the exception of the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), to join the agitation and collectively pressure the state government. Despite this broad invitation, the protest witnessed the conspicuous absence of major opposition players.
The principal opposition party, AIADMK, chose to stay away from the event. Furthermore, invitations extended to actor Vijay's Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) and even allies of the DMK failed to yield participation, as none of them attended the protest.
Who Stood in Solidarity?
Despite the notable no-shows, the protest did garner support from a few political quarters. BJP's Tamil Nadu vice-president, Karu Nagarajan, marked his presence. AMMK's deputy general secretary, G Senthamizhan, also participated in the demonstration.
Adding weight to the cause, MLA Poovai Jagan Moorthy took part to express his solidarity with the PMK's demands. A functionary representing Seeman's Naam Tamilar Katchi (NTK) was also present at the protest site in Chennai.
The Road Ahead for Caste Survey Demand
The protest underscores the persistent political pressure on the DMK government led by Chief Minister M.K. Stalin to initiate a comprehensive caste-based census in the state. The Vanniyar community, a significant demographic bloc in northern Tamil Nadu, has long been at the forefront of the demand for enhanced quota benefits.
While the ruling DMK has, in principle, spoken about conducting a caste survey, concrete steps are yet to be announced. The PMK's solo protest, with limited cross-party backing, highlights the complex political calculations surrounding the sensitive issue of caste-based reservations in Tamil Nadu's electoral landscape. The event sets the stage for further political negotiations and potential mobilization around this pivotal issue.
