PMPML Chairman Pankaj Deore Removed After Just Seven Months in Office
The Maharashtra state government has made a significant administrative change at the Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Limited (PMPML), removing Pankaj Deore from his position as chairman and managing director (CMD). This decision comes less than seven months after Deore assumed charge of the crucial public transport body serving the Pune metropolitan region.
New Leadership: Mahesh Awhad Takes Over as CMD
In a swift replacement move, the government has appointed Mahesh Awhad as the new chairman and managing director of PMPML. Awhad was previously serving as the chief executive officer of the Maharashtra Medical Goods Procurement Authority based in Mumbai. His appointment signals a fresh attempt to address the persistent challenges facing Pune's public transportation system.
Pankaj Deore had taken over the PMPML leadership from Deepa Mudhol-Munde, who had assumed office in July 2024. Deore's appointment as CMD occurred in mid-July of last year, making his tenure one of the shortest in the organization's troubled history.
Chronic Instability in PMPML Leadership
The removal of Deore continues a troubling pattern of leadership instability at PMPML. Remarkably, in the past 19 years alone, the transport body has witnessed more than 21 different individuals serving as chairman and managing director. Pankaj Deore becomes the 22nd person to hold this position during this period.
This revolving door of leadership has created significant operational challenges. Except for RN Joshi, who was appointed back in 2011, none of the officers have managed to complete the standard three-year tenure expected for the CMD position. Both Mudhol-Munde and Deore, along with several other officers before them, have been unable to serve out their full terms at the struggling transport authority.
Economic Survey Reveals Grim Reality
The timing of this leadership change coincides with concerning revelations from recent economic survey reports about PMPML's operational status. These reports paint a particularly grim picture of the transport body's current situation, highlighting two critical issues that have been worsening over time.
First, the survey identifies a severe shortage of operational buses within the PMPML fleet, directly impacting service frequency and reliability for daily commuters. Second, and perhaps more alarmingly, the reports document a consistent decline in passenger traffic, suggesting diminishing public confidence in the transportation services being offered.
This combination of leadership instability and operational challenges creates a complex scenario for the newly appointed Mahesh Awhad as he takes charge of PMPML. The transport body serves as a vital lifeline for Pune's growing population, and effective leadership will be crucial for addressing both immediate operational issues and long-term strategic planning.
