Three Police Officers Injured in BJP-CPI(M) Clash Over Land Dispute in Kerala
At least three police officers sustained injuries during a violent confrontation between Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)] workers in Nettayam, Thiruvananthapuram. The incident, which occurred on Sunday evening, has led to police registering cases against approximately 94 individuals directly involved in the clash, with an additional case filed against over 100 BJP workers for subsequent protests.
Details of the Violent Incident
According to official reports, a police team from the Vattiyoorkavu police station responded to a distress call around 8:30 PM near St. Sebastian's Church at Malamukal. Upon arrival, they encountered a heated altercation between workers of the two political parties. The situation quickly escalated into physical violence, resulting in injuries to three law enforcement personnel.
The injured officers have been identified as Civil Police Officers Deepu and Shibu, along with Station House Officer Vipin AC of Vattiyoorkavu police station. CPO Deepu suffered a head injury after being struck with a stone allegedly by a CPI(M) worker, while SHO Vipin AC was attacked by a BJP supporter. CPO Shibu was assaulted with a stick during the melee.
Root Cause: Family Property Dispute
Police officials revealed that the clash originated from a longstanding land dispute between two relatives—one affiliated with the BJP and the other supporting the CPI(M). Both parties had previously filed complaints against each other regarding the property matter. The personal conflict transformed into a political confrontation when workers from both sides intervened, leading to the violent outbreak that also endangered responding police personnel.
Aftermath and Political Protests
Following the incident, tensions remained high as BJP workers gathered in significant numbers outside the Vattiyoorkavu police station late Sunday night. The protesters alleged biased police action, claiming that measures were taken predominantly against their party members. During this demonstration, television reporters covering the event faced questioning from the agitated crowd.
In response to the protest, law enforcement authorities registered a separate case against more than 100 BJP workers. This development highlights the ongoing political friction in the region and the challenges faced by police in maintaining order during such conflicts.
Broader Implications
This incident underscores the volatile nature of political rivalries in Kerala, where personal disputes can quickly escalate into larger confrontations involving party workers. The attack on police officers performing their duties raises serious concerns about law and order in the area. Authorities continue to investigate the matter thoroughly, with all involved parties facing legal consequences for their actions.
