Prajakt Tanpure Signals Imminent Departure from NCP (SP) to Join BJP
In a significant political development in Maharashtra, Prajakt Tanpure, the nephew of former state NCP (SP) president Jayant Patil and a former MLA, has strongly indicated that he might soon leave the party to join the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Tanpure is expected to formally announce his decision on April 20, which coincides with Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis's scheduled visit to Rahuri in Ahmednagar district.
Background: From Frontrunner to Potential Defector
Tanpure was initially considered the frontrunner for the NCP (SP) ticket for the upcoming Rahuri assembly by-election. However, in a last-minute twist, BJP state president Ravindra Chavan held discussions with him, following which Tanpure publicly declared that he would not contest the bypoll. This abrupt withdrawal immediately triggered intense speculation about his potential crossover to the BJP.
Adding fuel to the rumors, Chavan later stated publicly that Tanpure would be warmly welcomed if he decided to join the BJP. Notably, Tanpure has also maintained a conspicuous distance from campaigning for the NCP (SP) candidate, Govind Mokate, in the Rahuri bypoll, further solidifying the perception of his impending exit.
Tanpure's Rationale: The Allure of Power and Public Sentiment
Explaining his contemplations, Tanpure remarked, "After spending so many years in politics, I have realised that there are limitations to working for the people and supporters if you are not part of the government. A large section of my supporters feel I should take a call. I will speak to them before making any final decision."
He also questioned the contemporary relevance of political loyalty, observing that those who remain steadfast to their parties and ideologies often struggle, while those willing to make ideological compromises find themselves in power. Citing examples like Eknath Shinde and Ajit Pawar, he noted that despite facing criticism for their rebellions, voters ultimately backed them and kept them in government. "If people are supporting opportunistic politics, then politicians like us have to rethink our stand," he added pointedly.
Political Trajectory and Recent Electoral History
Tanpure's political journey adds context to this potential shift. He had previously defeated senior BJP politician Shivajirao Kardile in the 2019 assembly elections and later served as the Minister of State for Urban Development in the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government. However, Kardile reclaimed the seat by defeating Tanpure in the 2024 assembly polls.
Since the BJP-led Mahayuti coalition formed the government after the 2024 elections, speculation about Tanpure joining the BJP has intensified, with many viewing it as a strategic move to regain political relevance and access to power.
NCP (SP) Response: Hope for Retention Amid Uncertainty
Reacting to the speculation, state NCP (SP) president Shashikant Shinde expressed confidence that Tanpure would remain with the party. He stated that Tanpure would have comfortably won the Rahuri bypoll had he contested it. "He informed the party that he was not interested in contesting, which is why we fielded another candidate. I will meet Tanpure soon, and after our discussion, I am confident he will continue with the party and participate in the campaign," Shinde asserted, highlighting the party's efforts to retain its leader.
The political circles in Maharashtra are now keenly awaiting April 20, when Tanpure's anticipated announcement could mark another notable realignment in the state's dynamic political landscape, reflecting the ongoing trends of defections and ideological fluidity.
