Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Voices Frustration Over Kerala Government's Lack of Cooperation

Congress leader and Wayanad MP Priyanka Gandhi expressed significant frustration on Tuesday, alleging a severe lack of cooperation from the Left Democratic Front (LDF) government in Kerala regarding critical development challenges in her constituency. Speaking at a campaign meeting in Kalpetta, Gandhi highlighted specific instances where state authorities allegedly created obstacles, particularly in addressing the aftermath of natural disasters.

Allegations of Hurdles in Housing Project for Landslide Victims

Gandhi specifically pointed to the Mundakkai-Chooralmala landslide tragedy as a prime example of governance failures. She claimed that the state government deliberately posed hurdles to a Congress-led housing initiative intended for the victims of this disaster. According to her, approvals for this crucial project were only granted after the LDF administration had already moved forward with its own township development plan, suggesting political maneuvering rather than humanitarian concern.

"As your MP, my biggest frustration is that when I see problems and come to you as your representative, it is my responsibility to try and resolve them. But I have found that I can do so only up to a point," Gandhi stated emphatically. "Without cooperation from the state and central government, it becomes very difficult to do our job effectively."

Detailed Account of Delays and Political Interference

The Congress MP provided a detailed account of the bureaucratic delays that plagued the housing project. She explained that efforts to secure land and complete necessary documentation were consistently delayed at multiple administrative stages. "Both LDF and UDF inaugurated the project only a few months back just before the elections. I know that on our part, we were trying for the entire period to secure the land and to get the paperwork done for the land. At every step it was difficult to get those clearances," Gandhi revealed.

She further noted that her colleagues from the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) likely faced similar challenges, indicating a broader pattern of obstruction against opposition-led initiatives. Gandhi lamented that the initial collective support across political lines following the disaster was eventually overshadowed by political compulsions, turning a humanitarian effort into a partisan issue.

Call for Political Change and Future Promises

Gandhi described the entire situation as a "missed opportunity", arguing that despite available resources, governance had failed to adequately address the region's key issues. She emphasized the critical need for political alignment, stating, "And that is where for us — the MPs and MLAs in the opposition — that it is extremely important that we have our own state government in place as well."

Looking ahead, Gandhi made a significant campaign promise, declaring that if the United Democratic Front (UDF) is voted to power, they would establish a world-class tribal university in Wayanad. This institution would be dedicated to preserving tribal culture and significantly expanding educational opportunities for tribal students, addressing long-standing gaps in the region's development framework.

The allegations and promises come at a crucial time, highlighting the ongoing political tensions in Kerala and the specific developmental struggles faced by the Wayanad constituency under the current administrative dynamics.
