The property ID issue has become a major flashpoint in the Sampla municipal committee chairperson election, significantly influencing voter sentiment ahead of the May 10 polling. The contest has turned multi-cornered, with candidates including BJP's Parveen Coach and independents Rakesh Sarpanch, Sudhir Ohlyan, Ankit Ohlyan, and Anil Sharma in the fray. With no Congress candidate, the campaign has become largely local, with civic issues dominating over party politics.
Residents voice grievances over property ID system
Residents across various wards have raised concerns about the property ID system, citing incorrect entries, delays in corrections, and the need for repeated visits to government offices. Some have also alleged harassment and corruption during the process. Observers note that the system, intended to streamline records and taxation, has triggered public resentment due to implementation gaps.
Campaign rhetoric focuses on civic issues
Along with the property ID issue, sanitation, water shortage, and sewerage concerns are dominating campaign rhetoric. Independent candidate Rakesh Sarpanch has prominently raised the property ID issue, alleging harassment of residents and promising time-bound resolution of pending cases. He also flagged lack of development as a key concern. A resident alleged he had to pay Rs 2,000 to obtain a property ID despite having complete documents.
Other candidates have also acknowledged the issue, indicating it could influence voting patterns. The election is seen as a test of local governance, with voters prioritizing practical solutions over party affiliations.
