A protest was held near Kana Junction in Mangaluru on Tuesday, led by the DYFI Kana unit, the Autorickshaw Drivers' Union affiliated with CITU, and the Nagarika Horata Samiti, Kana. The demonstrators demanded the immediate completion of the incomplete four-lane road work on the Kana–MRPL stretch, which they allege is causing daily accidents.
Demand for Completion of Road Work
The protest was organized to highlight the negligence of authorities in completing the road project. Despite funds being released by the government after a prolonged public struggle, a tussle between the city corporation and the public works department has left the project neglected. As a result, the incomplete road has become a hazard, particularly for two-wheeler riders who have fallen victim to accidents.
Address by DYFI District President
DYFI district president BK Imtiyaz addressed the gathering, criticizing the authorities for their failure to act. He stated that while funds were allocated following persistent public demands, bureaucratic disputes have stalled progress. He warned that if the work is not completed soon, protesters would gherao the city corporation office. Imtiyaz also expressed disappointment that elected representatives have remained silent spectators to the ongoing issues.
Other Speakers at the Protest
DYFI Surathkal zone secretary Srinath Kulal and Autorickshaw Drivers' Union president Abdul Basheer also addressed the protest, echoing similar demands for immediate action. The protesters urged the authorities to prioritize the safety of commuters and complete the road work without further delay.
The protest underscores the growing frustration among local residents and commuters who have been facing daily challenges due to the incomplete road. The groups involved have vowed to escalate their agitation if their demands are not met promptly.
