Puducherry Seat-Sharing Pact Finalized After BJP High Command Intervention
The political landscape in Puducherry witnessed a significant development on Friday as the All India NR Congress (AINRC) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) successfully concluded their seat-sharing negotiations. This agreement effectively resolves the prolonged tussle concerning the inclusion of Jose Charles Martin's Latchiya Jananayaga Katchi (LJK) within the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) fold.
Seat Distribution Details and Alliance Structure
According to the finalized arrangement, the AINRC will contest in 16 assembly constituencies, while the BJP and its allied parties will compete for the remaining 14 seats. The BJP has strategically planned to field candidates in 10 seats, allocating two seats each to the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) and the Latchiya Jananayaga Katchi from its allocated quota.
This distribution marks a crucial step in consolidating the NDA's position ahead of the upcoming elections, ensuring a unified front against the opposition.
Resolution of Disputes Through High-Level Mediation
AINRC founder and Chief Minister N Rangasamy, who had initially opposed the inclusion of LJK in the NDA, ultimately acquiesced following direct intervention from the BJP high command in New Delhi. Rangasamy personally called on Union Minister and BJP election in-charge for Puducherry, Mansukh Mandaviya, at a hotel to finalize the deal.
Addressing reporters in the presence of Mandaviya after the meeting, Rangasamy emphatically stated, "We are firmly in the NDA. There is no change in our stance. We will face this election together." He further revealed that Union Home Minister Amit Shah had personally advised him that LJK's inclusion would significantly strengthen the coalition. "Based on that advice, the new party is now part of the alliance," Rangasamy added.
Leadership and Campaign Strategy Confirmed
Mandaviya reaffirmed Rangasamy's leadership role, declaring him as the leader of the NDA in Puducherry and confirming that the election would be contested under his guidance. Regarding AINRC's longstanding demand for statehood for Puducherry, Mandaviya indicated that the NDA's poll manifesto would address this issue comprehensively.
He also announced that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah are scheduled to visit Puducherry to spearhead the election campaign, underscoring the alliance's commitment to a vigorous and coordinated effort.
Simultaneous Political Developments and Opposition Status
In a parallel development, Chief Minister Rangasamy filed his nomination papers to contest from two constituencies: Thattanchavady and Mangalam, demonstrating his active engagement in the electoral process.
Meanwhile, the opposition front comprising the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and the Congress party has yet to finalize its seat-sharing agreement, potentially placing them at a strategic disadvantage as the election approaches.
