Pune's Standing Committee Proposes Major Public Transport Reforms
In a significant move aimed at enhancing urban mobility and supporting the elderly, the chairman of Pune's standing committee, Shrinath Bhimale, has put forward a proposal to offer a substantial 50% discount on ticket fares for PMPML bus journeys exclusively for citizens aged 60 years and above. This initiative is designed to attract a larger number of commuters while simultaneously providing affordable and accessible public transport options for senior residents, thereby fostering a more inclusive city environment.
Comprehensive Transport Integration and Expansion Plans
Beyond the fare discount, the standing committee is actively working on a series of ambitious measures to strengthen Pune's public transport infrastructure. Key among these is the integration of Metro and PMPML services, which is expected to create a seamless commuting experience for passengers. A comprehensive transport plan is slated to be developed within the next six months, focusing on transit-oriented zones near Metro stations to optimize connectivity and efficiency.
To address the persistent issue of inadequate parking facilities, the committee has proposed the development of approximately seven new parking spaces across various areas of the city. Additionally, existing parking lots will be upgraded into multi-storeyed structures to accommodate a greater volume of vehicles, alleviating one of the major challenges faced by travelers in Pune.
Infrastructure Development and Private Sector Collaboration
In a bid to improve road maintenance and reduce civic burdens, the standing committee has introduced a road adoption plan in the budget. This initiative will involve collaboration with private companies, which will be responsible for the regular upkeep and repair of 35 roads throughout the city. Bhimale emphasized the committee's commitment to engaging private players to ensure high-quality maintenance and timely repairs.
Furthermore, the committee has assured adequate funding for ongoing infrastructure projects, including flyovers, bridges, and grade separators. The civic administration has prioritized the completion of 'missing link' roads, with the standing committee pledging to provide the necessary financial resources to expedite these developments.
Vision for Pune's Future Infrastructure
Bhimale highlighted that the civic body is diligently working to execute the infrastructure projects outlined in the vision document presented by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. Studies are currently underway for proposed road tunnels aimed at easing traffic flow and enhancing overall transportation efficiency. The transport utility is also developing a business master plan to upgrade its depots, and additional buses are being added to the PMPML fleet in the coming days to bolster service capacity.
