Tragic Incident Claims Life of Pune Flower Vendor During Sudden Storm
A 60-year-old flower vendor lost her life on Thursday afternoon when a tree collapsed on her during a sudden bout of heavy rainfall and strong winds in Pune. The victim, identified as Ranjana Navnath Giri from Ganeshmala near Sinhagad Road, was selling flowers on a footpath when the weather turned severe.
Details of the Fatal Accident
According to Senior Inspector Rajendra Sahane of the Parvati police, Giri was conducting her daily flower selling business when heavy rain began around 3:30 PM. "She moved with her flowers to seek shelter near a truck parked under a tree on Navshya Maruti Mandir Lane. The tree was already leaning, and within minutes, strong winds uprooted it completely, trapping her beneath," Sahane explained.
Nearby residents immediately alerted emergency services. Fire brigade personnel rushed to the scene and conducted rescue operations. Giri, who sustained grievous injuries, was transported to a private hospital in Erandwane, where doctors pronounced her dead upon arrival.
Emergency Services Overwhelmed by Multiple Incidents
The tragic incident was part of a larger pattern of weather-related emergencies across Pune on Thursday. City Fire Brigade Chief Devendra Potphode reported that emergency services received 84 distress calls specifically related to tree falls between 2:30 PM and 7:30 PM. Additionally, there were six reports of water entering houses and hutments.
"We started receiving emergency calls around 2:30 PM, and they continued non-stop until 7:30 PM," Potphode stated, highlighting the severity of the weather conditions.
Additional Damage and Official Response
The falling tree that killed Giri also crushed a nearby fruit cart, adding to the destruction. In other parts of the city:
- At Kondhwe Dhawade, tin sheets from an under-construction four-storey building were blown onto the road, though no injuries were reported
- A car was damaged when a tree fell on it in Hadapsar's Gadital area
- Several incidents involved trees falling on vehicles and iron structures collapsing due to strong winds
Pune Mayor Manjusha Nagpure visited the accident site on Sinhagad Road later in the day. "There was cloudburst-like rainfall accompanied by strong winds, which caused several trees and branches to collapse, blocking traffic. Given the severity of the rainfall, very little could have been done at that moment," she commented.
Police Investigation and Personal Background
Police have initiated the process to register an accidental death report. Inspector Sahane noted that Giri would walk daily to the chowk area to sell flowers, making her a familiar figure in the neighborhood. The investigation continues as authorities assess the full extent of damage caused by the sudden storm.
The incident serves as a sobering reminder of the dangers posed by extreme weather events in urban areas, particularly when infrastructure like aging trees becomes vulnerable during severe conditions.
