Pune LPG Cylinder Delivery Crisis: 96-Hour Deadline Unmet Amid Supply Shortages
The district administration's directive to LPG dealerships in Pune to deliver cylinders within 96 hours of booking is facing significant challenges, with agencies unable to comply due to a large backlog of pending orders, reduced supply from oil marketing companies (OMCs), and shortages of imported LPG, officials confirmed on Thursday.
Administration Pressure vs. Ground Reality
A senior district administration official revealed that dealerships have formally informed authorities about their inability to meet the four-day deadline. The official stated, "We had instructed LPG dealerships that cylinders must be delivered within 96 hours, but they are reporting they cannot achieve this. There is a substantial backlog, and bookings are arriving simultaneously, prompting another review meeting."
Despite administration requests for increased manpower and accelerated distribution, supply constraints remain a critical concern. Officials noted that supply from OMCs has been below normal levels, with indications that imported LPG availability has also been impacted, slowing replenishment at dealerships.
Scale of the Backlog
Recent data illustrates the severity of the situation. One city dealership alone reported approximately 6,000 pending bookings while handling only about 1,200 cylinders daily, making rapid clearance of the queue nearly impossible. This imbalance between demand and supply has created a logistical bottleneck.
Pune District Collector Jitendra Dudi maintained a firm stance, declaring, "All dealers have been directed to clear the backlog within the next two days. We are supporting dealerships in every possible way to enhance deliveries. The 96-hour deadline for cylinder delivery must be met, and there will be no negotiation on this condition."
Dealers' Perspective: Practical Challenges
City-based LPG dealers strongly disagreed with the administration's deadline, labeling it impractical under current circumstances. One dealer explained that agencies are prioritizing clearing old bookings before addressing new ones.
The dealer elaborated, "It is neither possible nor feasible at this moment. We are exerting maximum effort because failing to clear this backlog will lead to greater problems soon. Over the past two days, most market players have focused on addressing old pending bookings first. Customers are complaining even about deliveries delayed by a few hours beyond 96 hours, and some are filing RTIs citing the collector's four-day order."
Another dealer highlighted the supply issue, stating, "Delivering within 96 hours is currently impossible as supply remains limited and we have numerous pending bookings. Once supply improves and the backlog is cleared, we could potentially deliver within 48 hours, but system stabilization will require time."
Operational Strategies and Future Outlook
Dealers are implementing a first-in, first-out system to manage the crisis, focusing on clearing the oldest bookings initially. One dealer reported his agency alone has over 6,000 pending bookings, with some distributors receiving reduced supply.
The dealer added, "We anticipate streamlining within the next seven days and are working to clear the backlog as quickly as possible. The combination of high demand and constrained supply has created unprecedented pressure on the distribution network."
The situation underscores a critical disconnect between administrative directives and on-ground operational realities, with both sides acknowledging the need for improved supply chains and realistic timelines to restore normalcy in LPG cylinder delivery services across Pune.
