Pune Mayor Directs Fresh Survey of Illegal Encroachments Following Flash Floods
Pune Mayor Manjusha Nagpure announced on Friday that the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) will conduct a comprehensive fresh survey of all illegal encroachments on nullahs and other water streams. This decisive action comes in direct response to the severe flash flooding that inundated the city after recent unseasonal heavy downpours.
Immediate Measures to Combat Chronic Waterlogging
The decision was finalized during a high-level meeting with civic officials on Friday, convened just one day after major waterlogging paralyzed numerous areas across Pune following intense rainfall. Mayor Nagpure emphasized the urgent need for the civic administration to intensify efforts to reduce chronic flooding hotspots throughout the city.
"The civic administration must make concerted efforts to reduce chronic flooding spots. There is an immediate requirement to enhance the stormwater drainage network and install efficient pipelines for the rapid discharge of stagnated rainwater," Nagpure stated firmly during a press briefing.
Streamlining Tree Trimming and Infrastructure Upgrades
In addition to addressing water management, the mayor issued directives to expedite tree maintenance procedures. She mandated that applications for tree trimming should receive approval within 48 hours of their submission to prevent accidents. Furthermore, Nagpure stressed the importance of replacing aging and deteriorating pipelines across the city to improve overall infrastructure resilience.
"PMC should not differentiate between private properties and public locations when it comes to trimming dangerous trees. Public safety must be the paramount concern," Nagpure added, highlighting a uniform approach to hazard mitigation.
PMC Identifies 270 Critical Waterlogging Spots
The Pune Municipal Corporation has officially identified 270 locations around the city that are highly prone to waterlogging and require urgent repairs and thorough cleaning. Civic officials confirmed that remediation work will commence at 120 of these critical sites starting Monday, prioritizing the most vulnerable areas.
PMC Commissioner Naval Kishore Ram outlined the corporation's proactive infrastructure development initiatives designed to combat flash-flooding incidents. "We are committed to completing 10 large retaining walls near such flooding hotspots before the upcoming monsoon season. Additionally, operations for nullah cleaning and stormwater drain maintenance will be significantly accelerated," Commissioner Ram assured the public.
Thursday's Intense Rainfall Causes Widespread Disruption
The urgency of these measures was underscored by a sharp and intense spell of rain that lasted nearly two hours on Thursday afternoon. This unseasonal downpour delivered 84mm of rainfall over the NDA area and 65mm in Shivajinagar, catching residents completely off guard.
The deluge triggered extensive waterlogging, severe traffic snarls, and multiple power outages, throwing daily life into disarray across Pune. Tragically, the severe weather claimed one life when a tree fell on Ranjana Navnath Giri, a resident of Ganeshmala near Sinhagad Road, around 3:30 PM near Navshya Maruti Mandir. Two other individuals sustained minor injuries in the same accident.
Authorities received more than 100 complaints regarding uprooted trees. The PMC's disaster management cell documented 21 significant incidents, while the fire brigade recorded 82 separate complaints from various localities, highlighting the widespread impact of the storm.
