Pune Metro Expansion Plans Gain Momentum with Multiple New Proposals
As the Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Limited (Maha Metro) prepares to commence groundwork on key extension routes, elected representatives have stepped forward with several ambitious proposals to further expand Metro services across both Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad. This development comes at a critical time when urban mobility challenges are intensifying.
Three Key Proposals Tabled Before City Improvement Committee
At least three significant new proposals have been formally presented to the city improvement committee (CIC) of the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) for detailed consideration later this week. During discussions, corporators unanimously emphasized that Metro services are projected to play an indispensable role in offering viable alternatives to escalating road commute times, positioning the Metro as a leading public transportation solution for Pune's residents.
Corporators collectively expressed confidence that the Metro network will emerge as the primary public transport option, fundamentally transforming how people navigate the city's expanding urban landscape.
Detailed Breakdown of Proposed Extensions
Bavdhan area corporator Dilip Vedepatil has formally advocated for extending the Vanaz-Chandni Chowk Metro route all the way to Pirangut. While submitting his proposal, Vedepatil articulated, "Construction work for the Vanaz-Chandni Chowk segment is scheduled to begin shortly. However, it should not terminate at Chandni Chowk, as regions beyond this crucial junction are experiencing rapid development as well."
He further elaborated, "The proposed extension toward Pirangut would necessitate a comprehensive feasibility assessment due to a minor ghat section and varying gradients along the route. Nevertheless, Metro systems have been successfully implemented in comparable terrains in other metropolitan areas, including Mumbai."
Katraj to Dehu Road Metro Line Proposal
Another substantial proposal presented to the CIC involves establishing a Metro line stretching from Katraj to Dehu Road. This initiative aims to extend reliable Metro services to commuters residing along the Katraj-Dehu Road Bypass corridor, encompassing numerous developing localities such as:
- Wadgaon
- Warje
- Bavdhan
- Sus
- Baner-Balewadi
- Wakad
- Punawale
While certain Metro routes are already planned for portions between Katraj and Dehu Road—for instance, the Hinjewadi-Shivajinagar Metro line covers a segment of the bypass near Balewadi—this marks the first formal proposal for a continuous Metro extension reaching all the way to Dehu Road.
Yerwada-Vishrantwadi and Airport Connectivity Plans
Corporators representing Yerwada-Vishrantwadi, including Nandini Dhende, Sheetal Sawant, Harshal Tingre, and Suhas Tingre, have submitted a comprehensive Metro extension blueprint. This plan includes:
- An extension from Yerwada to the Ambedkar Chowk-Vishrantwadi-Alandi Road stretch
- An additional extension directed toward Lohegaon airport
The corporators emphasized that these projects are essential to mitigate worsening traffic congestion problems in these rapidly growing areas, providing much-needed relief to daily commuters.
Next Steps in the Approval Process
All these proposals are anticipated to undergo thorough discussion at the upcoming CIC meeting this week. Following committee sanction, they will proceed to the general body for final approval. This development follows last month's CIC approval of Metro's extension proposal from Katraj to Khed Shivapur, indicating sustained momentum in Pune's Metro expansion efforts.
The convergence of these multiple expansion proposals reflects a growing consensus among city representatives about the Metro's transformative potential in addressing Pune's pressing transportation challenges.
