Pune MLA Calls for BRT Lane Removal on Vishrantwadi Road to Alleviate Traffic Woes
In a significant move to address growing traffic concerns, Wadgaonsheri MLA Bapu Pathare has formally demanded the removal of Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) lanes along the Vishrantwadi Road stretch in Pune. This demand comes in the wake of the successful dismantling of BRTS infrastructure on Nagar Road last year, which was initiated following persistent requests from local residents.
MLA's Meeting with PMPML Officials Highlights Transport Issues
On Tuesday, Pathare convened a crucial meeting with officials from the Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Limited (PMPML) to deliberate on various challenges plaguing the city's public bus transport services. During the discussions, he underscored the severe traffic congestion plaguing Vishrantwadi Road and advocated for the elimination of BRT lanes as a strategic measure to enhance traffic flow and reduce bottlenecks.
The MLA emphasized that both the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) and PMPML should engage in thorough deliberations on this proposal and take decisive action to implement it. He further stressed the urgent need to bolster bus services along the Nagar Road and Vishrantwadi-Alandi Road corridors, pointing to the consistent surge in daily commuters that necessitates improved public transport infrastructure.
Historical Context and Resident Perspectives
Last year, the PMC heeded public demand by removing BRT lanes from a major section of Nagar Road, a move aimed at freeing up road space for all vehicle types. Prior to this, similar actions were taken on the Sangamwadi Road stretch, reflecting a broader trend of reevaluating BRTS systems in Pune.
Regular commuters on Vishrantwadi Road have reported a manifold increase in traffic volumes over recent years, particularly along the Vishrantwadi-Alandi Road corridor. Santosh Pille, a local resident, acknowledged that while removing BRT lanes might offer some relief in traffic movement, the benefits would be limited without concurrent upgrades to PMPML's bus services. "There are no direct bus services connecting Vishrantwadi to several key parts of the city, which forces many residents to depend heavily on private vehicles," he remarked, urging PMPML to expand bus routes to curb this reliance.
Another resident, Ajay Sathe, called for a comprehensive study of bus operations on the Vishrantwadi route before any decision is made to dismantle the existing BRTS infrastructure. "It is crucial that authorities conduct a detailed analysis to ensure that any changes genuinely benefit the commuting public and do not inadvertently worsen transport issues," he advised.
Looking Ahead: The Future of Pune's Public Transport
As Pune continues to grapple with rapid urbanization and increasing vehicular traffic, the debate over BRT lanes highlights the delicate balance between dedicated public transport corridors and general road accessibility. Pathare's demand signals a push towards more flexible traffic management solutions, but it also underscores the imperative for PMPML to enhance its bus network to meet the evolving needs of the city's residents.
The outcome of this proposal will likely depend on collaborative efforts between the PMC, PMPML, and community stakeholders, aiming to create a more efficient and commuter-friendly transport ecosystem in Pune.
