Pune's PMPML Fleet Crippled by Sudden Downpour: 97 Buses Breakdown
Pune Rains: 97 PMPML Buses Breakdown, Commuters Stranded

Pune's Public Transport System Paralyzed by Unexpected Heavy Rains

Sudden and intense showers that battered Pune on Thursday laid bare significant deficiencies in the preparedness of the Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Ltd (PMPML). The transport authority witnessed a staggering 97 buses breaking down in a single day, creating widespread disruption and severe inconvenience for thousands of daily commuters.

Official Figures Reveal Alarming Pattern

According to official data released by PMPML, the breakdown count approached the 100-mark, sparking immediate concerns regarding the transport body's readiness for the impending monsoon season. This incident draws a troubling parallel to heavy rainfall events in July 2024, when the corporation recorded 108 and 124 breakdowns on two separate days, indicating a persistent, unresolved problem.

Senior officials conceded they were unprepared for the sudden deluge. "The rains came suddenly and we didn't expect them to be so intense. While buses are maintained regularly, the focus was mainly on summer conditions. The downpour caught us off guard," a PMPML official stated, highlighting a potential seasonal maintenance blind spot.

Commuters Endure Harrowing Ordeals

Passengers faced immense hardship as buses stalled mid-route amidst poor visibility and extensive waterlogging. Ashish Palkhe, a commuter traveling towards Wanowrie, recounted a distressing experience. "The bus suddenly stopped in heavy rain. Visibility was extremely low and we didn't even know where we were for a long time. The driver later informed us of a technical issue. We were stuck inside for nearly two hours as stepping out meant getting drenched," he said.

Palkhe added that the bus had halted near Camp, an area notorious for tree falls during storms, which heightened anxiety among the stranded passengers. "Once the rain reduced, we got down, but it took me another 45 minutes to find an autorickshaw due to traffic jams," he explained, detailing the compounded difficulties.

Another commuter reported observing multiple stalled buses along Tilak Road. "Waterlogging was severe on many roads. While driving in such conditions is difficult, so many breakdowns raise serious questions about maintenance, especially with monsoon approaching," the commuter remarked, voicing a common public concern.

Officials Cite Multiple Causes, Activists Reject Excuses

PMPML officials attributed the widespread failures to a combination of factors, including:

  • Water ingress into electrical circuits and control systems.
  • Severe waterlogging on key roads and thoroughfares.
  • Poor road conditions leading to an increased incidence of tyre punctures.

"Some issues become unavoidable in such extreme conditions," an official claimed, attempting to contextualize the scale of the failure.

However, transport activists firmly dismissed these explanations, criticizing PMPML's recurring inability to address fundamental issues. Sanjay Shitole of the PMP Pravasi Manch pointedly asked, "Every month we see similar breakdown numbers. This was just one day of rain. Why are they still making excuses instead of fixing basic issues?" His comments underscore growing public frustration with the transport utility's performance.

Systemic Issues in a Critical Fleet

PMPML operates a critical fleet of nearly 2,000 buses serving Pune's metropolitan area. Despite repeated assurances from management over the years, the frequency of such breakdown incidents has not seen a significant reduction. This persistent problem raises serious and legitimate doubts about the corporation's long-term maintenance strategies, procurement of robust vehicles, and overall disaster preparedness, particularly with the full monsoon season looming on the horizon. The event serves as a stark reminder of the urgent need for systemic overhaul and proactive planning to ensure reliable public transportation during adverse weather conditions.
