Pune Residents Voice Concerns Over PCMC's Monsoon Preparedness
Residents in Pune's Pimpri Chinchwad area have highlighted significant gaps in the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation's (PCMC) monsoon preparedness efforts. They assert that the heavy rainfall over the past two days has exposed recurring civic issues across several neighborhoods, raising alarms about potential disruptions during the ongoing monsoon season.
Flooded Underpasses Cause Commuter Inconvenience
In Punawale, commuters faced considerable inconvenience after the underpass used to cross the Pune-Bengaluru highway became flooded. This forced individuals to take lengthy detours, disrupting daily travel. Nilesh Patil, a local resident, expressed frustration, stating, "This problem has persisted since last year. Authorities had assured us that the issue would be resolved following the widening of the service road and the installation of new stormwater drainage lines. However, the work remains incomplete, and we fear these problems will flare up again this monsoon."
Similar Issues Reported in Other Areas
Residents from other parts of Pimpri Chinchwad have echoed these concerns. Nitin Yadav of Wakad reported that multiple underpasses were affected during the recent rains, indicating that drainage lines have not been adequately cleared. "There was heavy congestion on several roads, especially in areas where underpasses were shut," he noted, underscoring the broader impact on traffic and mobility.
Rainfall Data and Incident Reports
According to the India Meteorological Department, Chinchwad received 28.55 mm of rainfall on Thursday. The local fire brigade recorded 17 tree-fall incidents and one retaining wall collapse during the day. Fortunately, no injuries or casualties were reported from these events. Civic officials maintained that there were no major cases of waterlogging in the city, but residents' accounts suggest otherwise.
PCMC's Response and Ongoing Works
A senior PCMC official acknowledged that pre-monsoon works are still in progress, with nullah cleaning yet to be completed. "The municipal commissioner recently reviewed our preparedness. He has directed action against illegal constructions obstructing nullahs and instructed officials to expedite ongoing works," the official stated.
Civic officials provided details on the scale of the task, noting that Pimpri Chinchwad has 145 nullahs spanning nearly 94,913 metres. So far, over 20% of the cleaning work has been completed, with efforts continuing on the remaining stretches. However, residents remain skeptical about the pace and effectiveness of these measures, calling for more urgent and comprehensive actions to prevent further disruptions during the monsoon.
