Pune's Sadhu Vaswani Bridge Opening Pushed to August, Sparking Commuter Frustration
The highly anticipated opening of the Sadhu Vaswani bridge in Pune has been postponed until August, missing its original May-end target and disappointing thousands of daily commuters. Despite intervention from Pune Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar, who urged the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) to blacklist the contractor for slow progress, the delay persists due to unforeseen technical challenges.
Daily Commuters Bear the Brunt of Extended Delays
Residents and commuters from Koregaon Park, Wadia College, and Circuit House areas have expressed mounting frustration as traffic diversions become a permanent fixture of their daily routines. Motorists are forced to navigate longer, congested alternative routes, wasting time, fuel, and patience.
"This bridge is absolutely crucial for connectivity," said Koregaon Park resident Ashok Singh. "It links Nagar Road to Solapur Road, and its closure means people suffer daily. We don't understand why this work isn't being treated as a priority."
Technical Hurdles Under Railway Tracks Cause Major Setback
PMC officials have clarified that the delay stems from unexpected technical obstacles rather than negligence. Dinkar Gojare, head of PMC's special projects department, explained that while ramp construction on both sides proceeded smoothly, a significant roadblock emerged during pipeline installation beneath railway tracks.
"We encountered a box-type structure that completely obstructed our work while laying a water pipeline under the railway tracks," Gojare stated. "This required us to revise our plans, and obtaining necessary approvals from the railways consumed additional time, ultimately pushing our completion deadline to August."
Following the police commissioner's letter, PMC provided detailed explanations of these technical challenges to city police authorities, though this has offered little consolation to affected road users.
Traffic Gridlocks Worsen at Key Junctions
Daily traffic snarls at critical intersections including Wadia College chowk, Bund Garden Road, Mangaldas Road, and Ruby Hall Clinic Road continue to plague commuters. Many residents argue that more thorough preliminary studies could have prevented these disruptions.
"The administration should have conducted comprehensive surveys before commencing work," remarked Santosh Shirsat, another local resident. "People endure traffic jams every single day. Now that the deadline has shifted again, PMC must absolutely ensure they meet this August target without further delays."
Bridge Upgrade Promises Future Traffic Relief
The new Sadhu Vaswani bridge is designed to replace an older, narrower structure with just two lanes. Once completed, the modern four-lane bridge is expected to significantly improve traffic flow across the area. The railways have already granted necessary rail blocks to facilitate the installation of bridge girders over the tracks, indicating progress despite the setbacks.
Other Infrastructure Projects Show Better Progress
In more positive developments, PMC officials report that work on three additional bridges and flyovers in Koregaon Park, Vishrantwadi, and Ghorpadi has reached advanced stages and is projected for completion by June. Additional Municipal Commissioner Omprakash Divte recently conducted project reviews, instructing officials to implement weekly progress monitoring for all ongoing infrastructure initiatives.
For now, commuters in the Sadhu Vaswani bridge vicinity remain caught between hopeful anticipation and the relentless reality of traffic congestion, awaiting a vital transportation link that continues to elude timely completion.
