Punjab Assembly Special Session on May 1 for Labour Day

The Punjab council of ministers on Tuesday decided to convene a special session of the state's legislative assembly on May 1 to pay homage to the working class of the state. The session will be closely watched as it comes close on the heels of the defection of seven Aam Aadmi Party Rajya Sabha members to the Bharatiya Janata Party on April 24. However, there was no confirmation whether the matter could be discussed during the session.

Chief Minister's Announcement

Taking to social media platform X, Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann cited the occasion of Labour Day to call the session. He wrote, "This one-day session will be dedicated to the hardworking labourers and artisans who make a vital contribution to the country's social and economic development." He further added, "As part of this historic initiative, representatives of labour unions will be invited to the House as special guests."

Legislative Business and Challenges

According to a statement issued by the state government, the session will also discuss emerging challenges to the working class in the wake of national and international developments. Legislative business will be finalised by the business advisory committee of the assembly, the statement added. "In addition, during the session, other essential legislative business as determined by the business advisory committee will be carried out in accordance with established procedures, ensuring that key decisions necessary for the state's development and the strengthening of democracy are undertaken," the chief minister's post concluded.
