Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann Slams Amit Shah and Centre Over State Neglect

Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Saturday launched a scathing attack on Union Home Minister Amit Shah, accusing him of failing to address the state's key concerns during his recent visit. Mann expressed deep disappointment, stating that the people of Punjab had high expectations for announcements on minimum support price (MSP), farm loan waivers, and a special package, but were left empty-handed.

Disappointment Over Unmet Expectations

Interacting with mediapersons on the sidelines of the Progressive Punjab Investors' Summit, Mann highlighted the unmet hopes of farmers and citizens. "We expected Amit Shah to speak about MSP, loan waiver, or a special package for Punjab, but he left after merely abusing Punjabis," said Mann. He emphasized that the visit was marked by criticism rather than constructive dialogue, leaving the state's pressing issues unaddressed.

Allegations of Financial Discrimination

Mann accused the BJP-led Central government of consistently discriminating against Punjab by withholding rightful funds. "The Narendra Modi government withheld Punjab's RDF (rural development funds) and GST funds, and has still not released Rs 1,600 crore flood relief compensation," stated the CM. He further criticized the Centre for what he termed as "disaster tourism," where leaders visited during floods without providing substantial aid, noting that Punjab did not receive even Rs 16 from promised relief announcements.

Criticism on National Security Issues

Raising concerns over gangsterism, Mann described it as a national issue threatening the country's unity, integrity, and sovereignty. He alleged that the Centre failed to address it effectively, citing the case of gangster Lawrence Bishnoi, who he claimed was given shelter by the BJP government in a Gujarat jail and not allowed to be brought to Punjab for trial.

Drug Smuggling and State Efforts

On the issue of drugs, Mann asserted that preventing smuggling across the international border is primarily the Centre's responsibility. "Stopping drug smuggling from across the border is the Centre's responsibility, yet our government is installing anti-drone systems with its own funds to curb drugs," he emphasized. He questioned the lack of action against large narcotics seizures outside Punjab, such as the 3,000 kg of drugs seized at Mundra Port in Gujarat, where no meaningful steps were taken against those responsible.

Political Remarks and Future Elections

Taking a dig at the BJP's political ambitions in Punjab, Mann remarked, "In Punjab, BJP is a ‘scooter party' that dreams of capturing power in 2027 with the help of Congress." He questioned the BJP's organizational strength, asking, "From where will the BJP bring 117 candidates to contest alone in Punjab?" Mann added that the party might try to induct leaders from other parties due to a lack of local leadership, and asserted that Punjabis are well-aware of the BJP's political conduct, rejecting politics of hatred.

State Government's Proactive Measures

Despite these challenges, Mann highlighted that the Punjab government is taking decisive steps to curb drugs, strengthen the economy, and attract investment. He reiterated the state's commitment to addressing issues internally while calling for greater support and fairness from the Central government.
