The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP)-led Punjab government on Monday redistributed the portfolios held by arrested minister Sanjeev Arora among three of his cabinet colleagues. Arora was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in a money laundering case on Saturday.
Portfolio Allocation
Education minister Harjot Singh Bains has been given the additional portfolio of local government. New and renewable energy minister Aman Arora has been assigned the portfolios of industries and commerce, and investment promotion. Rural development and panchayat minister Tarurpreet Singh Sond has been given the additional charge of the power portfolio.
Background and Approval
Following Sanjeev Arora's arrest, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann proposed the redistribution on Sunday. The proposal was approved by Punjab Governor Gulab Chand Kataria on Monday.
A government functionary clarified that Sanjeev Arora has not been dropped from the cabinet and is likely to continue as a minister without a portfolio. The functionary remarked, "Even Arvind Kejriwal did not have any portfolio when he was in jail, but he continued as CM."
