Punjab Women's Commission Takes Suo Motu Action Against Derogatory Remarks
The Punjab State Women's Commission has taken suo motu notice of alleged derogatory remarks made by Bholath legislator Sukhpal Singh Khaira regarding the Rs 1,000 financial assistance provided to women in the state. In a significant move, the commission has summoned both Khaira and Punjab Congress president Amrinder Singh Raja Warring to appear before it on Thursday, March 12, for an explanation.
Alleged Disrespectful Comments on Women's Aid
According to the commission, Khaira recently made a remark about the Rs 1,000 allowance for women that was considered disrespectful and undermining the dignity of women. The comment, which reportedly included references to "dancing ladies," was made in the presence of Raja Warring, prompting the commission to issue notices to both leaders through the SSP Kapurthala.
Commission Chairperson Condemns Language
Punjab State Women's Commission chairperson Raj Lali Gill expressed serious concern over the language used in the remark. "Suo motu notice was taken of it. The way he (Khaira) used words about women and their dignity, like 'dancing ladies,' reflects the level of ego he carries," she stated. Gill emphasized that not everyone is born with privilege, and the financial assistance holds significant value for many women.
"If Sukhpal Khaira was born with a silver spoon, others are not. Ask the women who were celebrating and dancing what the value of Rs 1,000 is for them. They have small joys they can fulfil without asking anyone for money. Khaira only understands happiness worth crores; he probably does not know the value of Rs 1,000," she added.
Calls for Strict Action and Party Discipline
Gill further asserted that the use of such derogatory language against women is unacceptable and called for strict action. "If we examine the kind of derogatory language used, an FIR should be filed against Khaira. I also wrote to Raja Warring to take action against such undisciplined leaders. Khaira should be expelled from the party," she said. The commission made it clear that derogatory language for political gain will not be tolerated under any circumstances.
Summons and Expected Proceedings
The commission has directed both leaders to appear in person at its office on March 12. During the proceedings, the commission will:
- Seek Khaira's response regarding his alleged remarks.
- Question Raja Warring about why he did not object to the statement at the time it was made.
This action underscores the commission's commitment to protecting women's dignity and ensuring accountability among public figures in Punjab.
