The Punjab Congress on Monday welcomed the announcement of municipal elections scheduled for May 26, calling it the "start of a countdown" for the current state government and vowing accountability for partisan conduct.
Congress Prepares for Municipal Polls
State party president Amrinder Singh Raja Warring stated that the Congress is prepared to contest elections across the state. He expressed confidence in the party's readiness and called upon the Punjab State Election Commission to ensure an impartial electoral process. Warring alleged that previous local body elections were marred by police and administrative interference at the behest of the ruling party.
Warning to Officials
With the next state elections less than nine months away, Warring issued a stern warning to civil servants and police personnel. He said, "The Congress is certain to form the government. We will not forget. We will not forgive. Our advice to all officials is to do your job with integrity, without fear or favour." This statement underscores the party's determination to hold accountable those who engage in partisan actions.
Referendum on Government's Future
Warring characterized the upcoming municipal vote as a definitive referendum on the sitting government's future. He declared, "These elections will be the last nail in its coffin," indicating the party's belief that the municipal polls will reflect public dissatisfaction with the current administration.
The Congress party's strong stance comes as the state gears up for local body elections, which are seen as a crucial test of political strength ahead of the assembly elections.
