Punjab Governor Raises Alarm Over Rs 4 Lakh Crore Debt and Law-and-Order Woes

In a stark assessment of Punjab's current state, Governor Gulab Chand Kataria has identified two formidable challenges: a staggering public debt surpassing Rs 4 lakh crore and a rapidly deteriorating law-and-order situation. During his visit to the historic Mata Shri Kali Devi Temple in Patiala on Monday, the governor addressed media queries, emphasizing that while budget figures might appear "attractive" on paper, the harsh reality of this massive debt burden cannot be overlooked.

Fiscal Crisis and Unsustainable Financial Practices

Governor Kataria pointed out that the widening gap between revenue and expenditure in Punjab is unsustainable, necessitating a structural overhaul in the state's financial management. He reminded state authorities that GDP rules strictly dictate that the fiscal deficit should not exceed 3%, urging a more disciplined approach to budget formulation. "The budget may show a positive outlook, but the challenge of Rs 4 lakh crore in debt is real. We must improve our fiscal management to ensure that expenses do not outpace our income," he stated, warning that without corrective measures, future development could be stifled by mounting interest liabilities.

Law-and-Order Deterioration and Public Insecurity

On the law-and-order front, Kataria described it as "A Bigger Challenge," attributing the rise in daily crimes to a lack of fear among criminals, which has created widespread public insecurity. He revealed that he has discussed the escalating crime rates and the need for more effective policing through direct communication with the Director General of Police (DGP). Additionally, he has written to state authorities seeking swift action on several critical matters that have remained unaddressed, highlighting the urgency of the situation.

Governor's Visit to Mata Shri Kali Devi Temple

During his visit, Governor Kataria paid obeisance at the Mata Shri Kali Devi Temple, praying for the "peace and development of Punjab." He reviewed the ongoing Rs 75 crore renovation work at the temple, expressing confidence that upon completion, it would emerge as a premier pilgrimage destination for the entire country. He also remarked that the Goddess, known as the "destroyer of evil," inspires leaders to work with sincerity and wisdom for the nation's betterment, underscoring the spiritual significance of the site amidst the state's pressing issues.
