Punjab Minister Laljit Singh Bhullar's Political Journey and Controversies
Laljit Singh Bhullar, a prominent leader of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in Punjab, has recently stepped down from his ministerial position following a major controversy. His resignation comes in the wake of the tragic suicide of Punjab State Warehousing Corporation official Gagandeep Singh Randhawa, which has sent shockwaves through the state's political landscape.
From Akali Dal to AAP: A Political Evolution
Bhullar's political career began with the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD), where he was closely associated with senior leader Adesh Partap Singh Kairon until around 2015. During this period, he also served as president of the Patti Grain Market Arhtiya Union, building a strong base among traders and farmers in the region.
The 2015 sacrilege incidents proved to be a pivotal moment in his career. Influenced by Congress leader Harminder Singh Gill, Bhullar distanced himself from the Akali Dal. After a brief return to the party during 2017-18, he made a decisive shift in 2019 by joining the AAP.
His rise within the AAP was swift. He became a constituency in-charge and later won the Patti seat in the 2022 Punjab Assembly elections. Following AAP's victory, he was inducted as a Cabinet minister in the Punjab government, marking a significant milestone in his political ascent.
A Tenure Marked by Controversy
However, Bhullar's tenure has been anything but smooth. Since the early days of his ministerial role, he has been embroiled in various controversies. Soon after taking oath, he faced criticism for an unusual public display during a celebratory procession, drawing negative attention from the outset.
Over time, his name has surfaced in multiple allegations, including links with controversial elements and disputes over local governance. His political career is also shadowed by accusations during local bodies and panchayat elections, where opposition leaders claimed he influenced outcomes. Instances of candidates being elected unopposed in certain panchayat and Block Samiti areas have raised eyebrows, with critics alleging that rival candidates were prevented from filing nomination papers.
The Randhawa Suicide Case and Resignation
The suicide of Gagandeep Singh Randhawa has brought Bhullar into the centre of a major storm. Randhawa allegedly consumed a poisonous substance, and his death has triggered widespread political ripples across Punjab. Opposition leaders are demanding a thorough probe into the incident, which is seen as potentially reshaping the local political dynamics.
Former Patti MLA Harminder Singh Gill has called for an impartial judicial inquiry into Randhawa's death. He alleges that Bhullar pressured the district manager to award mandi loading contracts to a preferred individual, and that Randhawa resisted this pressure, leading to an escalation of the situation.
Previous Allegations and Legal Troubles
Bhullar's controversies are not limited to recent events. He has faced previous allegations, including a case related to the alleged grabbing of land belonging to an NRI woman. These incidents have contributed to a perception of a career fraught with legal and ethical challenges.
As the investigation into Randhawa's death unfolds, Bhullar's resignation marks a significant development in Punjab politics. His journey from the Akali Dal to AAP, coupled with a series of controversies, underscores the volatile nature of political careers in the region. The fallout from this case is expected to have lasting implications for both Bhullar and the broader political landscape in Punjab.
