Punjab Minister Inspects Wheat Procurement Operations in Nabha
Punjab Minister for Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs, Forests and Wildlife Protection, Lal Chand Kataruchak, conducted a comprehensive review of wheat procurement activities at the Nabha grain market on Monday. The minister's visit focused on ensuring a seamless procurement process for farmers across the state.
Government Targets and Current Procurement Status
Minister Kataruchak revealed that the Punjab government has established an ambitious target of procuring 122 lakh metric tonnes of wheat during the current season. He confirmed that all necessary arrangements have been implemented to achieve this objective efficiently.
"Our government has made comprehensive preparations to facilitate smooth procurement operations," stated Kataruchak during his inspection. "We are committed to ensuring farmers receive full value for their produce without any unnecessary delays."
The minister provided specific data regarding the ongoing procurement process. Approximately 39 lakh metric tonnes of wheat have arrived in mandis across Punjab so far, with 34 lakh metric tonnes already successfully procured by government agencies.
Emphasis on Timely Payments and Farmer Welfare
Kataruchak emphasized the government's unwavering commitment to immediate payment processing for farmers. "Every single grain lifted from mandis will ensure immediate payment into farmers' accounts," he declared during his review.
The minister highlighted the significant improvements implemented under the current administration. "Under previous governments, farmers often waited for weeks to receive payments for their crops," Kataruchak noted. "Delays in procurement frequently led to protests and strikes in mandis. Our government has resolved these systemic issues completely."
Financial transparency remains a cornerstone of the current procurement system. Kataruchak confirmed that Rs 1,818 crore has already been credited directly to farmers' bank accounts through the ongoing procurement process.
Minimum Support Price and Operational Efficiency
The current minimum support price for wheat has been fixed at Rs 2,585 per quintal for this procurement season. This pricing structure ensures farmers receive fair compensation for their agricultural output.
Minister Kataruchak issued strict directives to officials during his visit, instructing them to prevent any inconvenience to farmers in the mandis. These instructions align with the explicit directions provided by Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann regarding farmer welfare during procurement operations.
"Our primary objective is to ensure prompt payment to farmers while accelerating the procurement process with full administrative support," Kataruchak explained. "The entire process is being conducted in a transparent and cooperative manner, setting an excellent record for farmer facilitation."
Systemic Improvements and Future Commitments
The minister detailed the substantial benefits farmers are experiencing due to significant improvements in both procurement and payment systems. These enhancements have transformed what was previously a challenging process into an efficient, farmer-friendly operation.
"Farmers are not facing hurdles in the mandis," Kataruchak affirmed. "Procurement is being carried out smoothly and promptly, with our government committed to completing the entire process without hindrance while ensuring timely payments to all farmers."
The Punjab government's procurement strategy represents a comprehensive approach to agricultural support, combining operational efficiency with financial reliability to benefit the state's farming community during this crucial wheat season.
