Congress MLA Pargat Singh Exposes Punjab's Severe Power Shortage

Congress MLA and former education minister Pargat Singh has strongly contested the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government's assertion that Punjab has become power-surplus. On Wednesday, Singh revealed that a significant gap of approximately 1,500 megawatts has emerged between electricity demand and supply across the state.

Worsening Situation Amid Rising Temperatures

Pargat Singh warned that the electricity crisis is likely to intensify as temperatures continue to climb. He emphasized that farmers are receiving minimal power supply, exacerbating agricultural challenges during this critical period.

Unannounced Power Cuts Plague Urban and Rural Areas

Despite being only in the third week of April, cities and villages across Punjab are already experiencing unannounced power cuts lasting between 8 to 10 hours. These outages coincide with severe heat conditions and multiple heat-wave alerts issued by meteorological authorities.

Major Cities Hit Hard by Electricity Shortages

The senior Congress leader specifically highlighted the grim situation in several key urban centers:

  • Ludhiana
  • Jalandhar
  • Amritsar
  • Bathinda
  • Patiala

"If these conditions continue, people might have to face outages during nighttime as well," Pargat Singh cautioned. He directly blamed the Punjab power utility for failing to bridge the electricity shortage that has gripped the state.

Dramatic Surge in Power Demand

Singh provided alarming statistics about Punjab's escalating electricity needs:

  1. Power demand has skyrocketed from 6,500 MW to over 10,000 MW in just the past week
  2. This represents a massive increase that has overwhelmed existing infrastructure
  3. The utility has been unable to meet this sudden spike in consumption

Government Accused of Hiding Failures

The Congress MLA accused the AAP government of implementing unannounced power cuts under the pretext of "beautification" projects to conceal their administrative failures. Furthermore, he claimed that consumers are not receiving accurate information through official helpline numbers, leaving residents frustrated and uninformed about the actual duration and reasons for power disruptions.

The exposure of this power crisis comes at a critical time when Punjab faces both agricultural demands and urban electricity needs during extreme weather conditions, raising serious questions about the state's energy infrastructure and governance.
