Punjab Government Rejects Amritpal Singh's Parole Request
The Punjab government has officially declined to grant temporary parole to Khadoor Sahib MP Amritpal Singh, who is currently detained under the National Security Act. The decision comes exactly one week after the Punjab and Haryana High Court disposed of a petition and directed the state government to make a determination on the parliamentarian's parole application.
Security Concerns Drive Government Decision
According to government sources, the rejection follows thorough assessments from both the Amritsar Deputy Commissioner and Amritsar Rural police. Both authorities submitted detailed reports to the Punjab Home Secretary expressing serious concerns about potential law and order implications. The reports unequivocally stated that Singh's release, even temporarily, would not be conducive for maintaining public safety and security in the region.
The 32-year-old MP, who represents Khadoor Sahib constituency, is currently incarcerated at Dibrugarh jail in Assam under the stringent National Security Act. His parole request was specifically made to enable his participation in the Winter Session of Parliament scheduled to commence on December 1.
Legal Journey and Court Proceedings
Amritpal Singh's legal efforts to secure freedom for parliamentary duties began when he approached the Supreme Court on November 10, challenging his NSA detention and seeking release to attend Parliament sessions. However, the apex court declined to hear his case directly and directed him to approach the Punjab and Haryana High Court instead.
Following the Supreme Court's direction, Singh filed a fresh petition in the Punjab and Haryana High Court. On November 21, the High Court disposed of the petition but gave a significant directive to the Punjab government, ordering them to decide on the parole request within one week.
The government's decision, reached after careful consideration of all police and district intelligence reports, will now be formally communicated to both the Lok Sabha Speaker and the detained MP himself. This development marks another chapter in the ongoing legal and political saga surrounding the controversial MP's detention.
