Punjab Government Approves Major Relief Package for Farmers After Devastating Hailstorms
The Punjab state government has sanctioned a substantial relief package exceeding Rs 123.28 crore for farmers whose agricultural crops suffered extensive damage due to severe hailstorms that struck multiple regions of the state last month. This announcement was made by Hardeep Singh Mundian, the Minister for Revenue and Disaster Management, during a press briefing on Wednesday.
Comprehensive Field Assessments Precede Relief Announcement
The relief package was formally approved following the completion of thorough field assessments conducted by district administrations across the affected areas. Minister Mundian emphasized that this timely compensation will assist cultivators in recovering from the unexpected financial losses incurred during the critical harvesting season.
"A relief package amounting to Rs 123,28,05,938 has been sanctioned to address crop damage spread over 92,695 acres in 111 villages spanning seven districts," stated Mundian, providing specific details about the government's response.
Detailed Breakdown of Crop Damage and Compensation Allocation
The minister provided a detailed categorization of the agricultural damage, revealing that 992 acres experienced damage ranging from 26% to 32%, while 61,115 acres sustained more significant damage between 33% and 75%. The most severely affected areas included 30,588 acres where crop damage reached 76% to 100%.
The compensation distribution across districts has been allocated as follows:
- Fazilka: Rs 44.24 crore
- Sri Muktsar Sahib: Over Rs 43.01 crore
- Bathinda: Rs 22.83 crore
- Moga: Rs 7.73 crore
- Amritsar: Rs 5.26 crore
Additionally, farmers in Ferozepur district will receive approximately Rs 17.10 lakh in compensation, while those in Rupnagar district have been sanctioned around Rs 1.35 lakh.
Transparent Compensation Mechanism Based on Crop Loss Severity
Minister Mundian explained the methodology behind the relief calculations, stating, "The relief has been calculated on the basis of crop loss severity, covering agricultural land where damage ranged from 26% to complete loss. This approach ensures a fair and transparent compensation mechanism for every affected farmer."
Widespread Agricultural Impact Across Punjab
Punjab experienced unseasonal hailstorms and heavy rainfall during late March and early April, severely impacting standing crops throughout the state. Wheat crops were particularly affected during this crucial period.
Official reports indicate that crops on approximately 1.3 lakh acres of agricultural land were affected statewide. In districts like Fazilka, which emerged as one of the worst-hit regions, farmers reported catastrophic losses reaching up to 100% of their crops.
The government's comprehensive relief package represents a significant intervention to support the agricultural community during this challenging period, aiming to mitigate the economic impact on farmers and ensure their continued participation in Punjab's vital agricultural sector.
