Punjab Government Earmarks Rs 1,793 Crore for Sports to Tackle Drug Menace and Foster Youth Growth
In a significant move aimed at curbing drug abuse and promoting holistic youth development, Punjab Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema announced on Monday that the state government has allocated a substantial Rs 1,793 crore for sports initiatives. Speaking at an event in Patiala, Cheema emphasized that the Bhagwant Mann-led administration is implementing a dual strategy: intensifying crackdowns on drug trafficking while simultaneously enhancing sports infrastructure to positively channel the energy of young people.
Twin Strategy: Enforcement and Empowerment
Cheema highlighted that previous governments had allocated less than Rs 150 crore for sports, resulting in inadequate facilities that inadvertently pushed youth towards substance abuse. "We have consistently increased the sports budget to develop playgrounds and modern stadiums, with encouraging results," he stated. This proactive approach is part of a broader effort to provide alternatives to drugs and foster a healthier lifestyle among Punjab's younger generation.
Job Creation and Economic Confidence
The minister also pointed to the government's success in job creation, noting that over 66,000 jobs have been provided in the past four years. This initiative has helped mitigate brain drain, with Cheema observing, "There has been a visible decline in passport applications, indicating growing confidence among youth to build their future within Punjab." Additionally, he mentioned a rise in college admissions, underscoring improved educational engagement and opportunities.
Infrastructure Development at Sports University
During his address, which followed the bhog ceremony of an Akhand Path at the new campus of Maharaja Bhupinder Singh Punjab Sports University in Siddhuwal, Cheema detailed recent infrastructure advancements. He revealed that Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann recently inaugurated new academic and hostel blocks at the university, constructed at a cost of Rs 53 crore. Funds for the remaining development projects are set to be released soon, further bolstering the state's sports ecosystem.
Strengthened State Finances and Revenue Growth
Cheema took the opportunity to highlight Punjab's improved fiscal health, noting a 3% reduction in the debt-to-GDP ratio and significant revenue growth. Key increases include:
- GST collections rising from Rs 60,000 crore to over Rs 1.3 lakh crore.
- Stamp and registration revenue increasing from Rs 12,000 crore to Rs 30,000 crore.
- Excise revenue growing from Rs 6,551 crore to Rs 12,800 crore annually.
These financial gains are seen as enabling greater investment in social and developmental programs like sports.
University Commitment to Anti-Drug Efforts
Vice-Chancellor Prof Pushpinder Singh Gill expressed gratitude to the minister and reaffirmed the university's dedication to promoting sports and supporting initiatives to combat drug abuse. This alignment with government goals underscores a collaborative approach to addressing youth-related challenges in the state.
Overall, the Punjab government's substantial sports budget allocation represents a strategic investment in youth welfare, aiming to reduce drug dependency through enhanced infrastructure, job opportunities, and economic stability.
